Book Description:
When Lauren Monroe first laid eyes on Michael Delaney back in high school, she had every reason to stay away from him; within minutes of their first encounter, his volatile actions confirmed his notorious reputation. But Lauren saw something in him that caused her to question his bad-boy persona, and against her better judgment, she took a chance. She had no way of knowing that the unlikely friendship they formed would become so important to her.

Or that it would end so painfully.

Eight years later, when Lauren begins her new job at Learn and Grow Day Care, Michael is the last person she expects to see. Refusing to revisit the hurt and confusion of their past, Lauren vows to keep her distance from him. But staying away from Michael proves to be more difficult than she thought, despite her lingering grief and her instincts for self-preservation.

As Lauren and Michael recall the friendship that changed them forever and the events that tore them apart, will they finally be able to heal? Or will the ghosts of Michael’s past prove to be too much to overcome?

“And she couldn’t help but smile at the irony of the fact that the baddest boy in school could somehow always make her feel like the world was good.”

Let me start off by saying that, “I freakin’ loved this book!”  Okay, that feels better.  Seriously, for those of you who know me personally, two of the requirements of most books I read are “steam” and a happily ever after ending.  Yes, you can call me a book snob all you want, and I know that I am missing out on many other great books.  But I don’t have a lot of time to read; therefore, I only read what I WANT to read.

So, imagine my surprise when I read Back to You, which has almost zero “steam” (or maybe you like to call it smut) and truly fell in love with the book and cannot stop talking about it.  I told Author Michelle Leighton that she had to read this book and how much I loved it.  And to quote her, “Priscilla Glenn,“ you should know that, from Michelle, this is THE HIGHEST compliment! She only reads and loves smut. You’ve achieved the unachievable! Fabulous!!!!!”

Maybe part of the reason I connected with this book so much is because it reminded me of my all-time favorite movie, Pretty in Pink.  Of course, you have rich kid Blane who falls for Molly Ringwald’s character, Andie, from the other side of the tracks.  His friends don’t know what he sees in her because she is poor and not in the clique.  But he saw the real Andie; he saw what was inside and eventually Blane tells off his so-called friends and wins Andie’s heart once and for all.

In Back to You, you have the incredibly sweet, but strong, and smart Lauren who can see a different side of Michael (Del) that no one else sees.  But what made me like Lauren so much was the fact that she never, ever tried to change Michael.  She accepted who he was and a friendship was formed which later developed into a relationship.  Honestly, Lauren was wise beyond her years because most high schoolers are so hung up on the “outside” that they can see what’s on the “inside.”  (And for this reason, I would definitely want Lauren for a BFF.)  🙂

Michael had a lot, and I mean a lot, of events happen in his young life.  Unfortunately, not only was the woman who gave birth to him a pathetic individual (who doesn’t deserve the title of mother), but she inflicted emotional abuse on Michael, which caused him to never forgive himself.  He comes across as the tough guy at school, and everyone is afraid of him.   But when Lauren and Michael are together, you will also see a completely different side of him.  Their banter back and forth is so sweet and refreshing.  Lauren can say stuff to Michael that no one else would ever get away with.

Hey, Lauren?” he called, and she stopped so abruptly her bag slid off her shoulder. She caught it at the last second and turned, her expression taken aback.
Del smirked. “Don’t be so surprised that I know your name. You’re not as invisible as you think you are.”
She closed her mouth, looking at him.
“I’m not gonna stop calling you Red, though” he added casually.”

Michael and Lauren separate after he finishes high school.  Their separation causes extreme heartache for Lauren, and for eight years she is haunted by the unanswered questions and phone calls…until fate intervenes and their paths cross again.

Back to You is about redemption and unconditional love and will leave your heart warm and fuzzy.   And since I tend to read more “adult type” books, the other reason I enjoyed Back to You so much is because I could share it with my 17-year-old daughter.  Needless to say, she “loved” the book too, and said she would be recommending it to her friends.

Without a doubt, Back to You is one of my top 10 reads of 2012, and you would do yourself a great disservice by not reading it.  If it’s on your TBR list, do yourself a favor and move it on up.  You can thank me later.  Ms. Glenn, you have yourself a new fan, and I anxiously await your next book and the one after that!
