Karen’s Review

Bound by Night by Larissa Ione is the start of her brand new vampire series.  Ione writes a hypnotic tale of vampires that have been integrated into our society as slave.  They are seen as subhuman wild creature that the wealthy use as servants and chattel in their homes.  The Martin family has built a multi-billion dollar fortune at the expense of the vampire populace in enslaving them, and using them as guinea pigs in scientific experiments.   No one seems to have a problem with the enslavement of the vampires; which baffled me as a reader.  Yes vampire rights activist are mentioned in the book, but because these beings are seen as a threat, what is done to them is completely okay with the general populace.

The ‘wild’ vampires live in tribal clan units, much like the Native population of the Americans did prior to the European colonization.  Just like the Native population the people in power are slowly eradicating them.  You know, might makes right and all that other B.S. that people spout to enslave anyone.

The Vampire populace is made up of born vampires and made vampires, the virus or magic which changes humans into vampires makes them a separate species.  A species that isn’t at all sub human, but even if they were, is enslavement of anyone the answer?  NO!!  Vampires in Ione’s tale also are only as violent as the violence they encounter.  So if they had been treated with humanity, they would give it in equal measure.  Problem is they have never been shown any humanity.  The abuse that the vampires have suffered since the general human populace discovered them is horrendous.  Yes, I can understand the violence that the vampires deal out to the humans who hunt and kill their brethren.

Bound by Night story centers on the heir to the Martin Corporation Nicole Martin and a vampire named Riker.  These two individuals are wrapped up in a violent history, which results in each of them hating the other one.  The story is a complex and enthralling one.  These two characters are complex and wounded people, and their past plays a large role in how they interact with each other.

Ione does a good job of building the world of the humans and vampires and I suspect, as in most Ione books, the world will be expanded on as the series progresses.  What I didn’t like about the book is that a character named Lucy, who I totally loved, played such a minor role in this book.  I wanted more Lucy interaction with the major characters.  Lucy just pulled at my heartstrings.  I can’t wait to see where Ione takes this series and the possibilities in this new vampire world are endless.
