Book Description

Hensley Bradley is the definition of the girl-next-door. She’s kindhearted, beautiful, and talented. Bored with her mundane life, thoughts of fleeing her small town begin to consume her. With aspiring dreams to use her voice as a one-way ticket, she suddenly discovers that music might not be her only passion.

After a fallout back home, Colby Grant decides to leave his family’s farm, determined to show his father he’s more than just a wanna-be country singer. With his All-American good looks, it doesn’t take long for girls in his new town to focus their eyes on him. But things aren’t what they appear from the outside, and it isn’t long until Colby feels he doesn’t fit into the perfect world that so quickly embraced him.

A chance encounter places Hensley in Colby’s path, but it isn’t her natural beauty that first captures his attention – it’s her voice.

When love and music mix, will the combination blossom into a beautiful melody or wither into a heart-wrenching tune?

Warning: This book is intended for readers 18+ due to explicit language and sexual encounters.

Robbie’s Review

In her latest novel, In the Lyrics,  author Nacole Stayton has written a captivating story about two young people who share a similar dream; to break into the brutally competitive world of country music.  Hensley Bradley is the daughter of a woman obsessed with a desire for Hensley to live the dream she gave up in order to be a mother….obsessed to the point that she has made Hensley fearful of becoming emotionally involved with any man who might come between her and her dream.   Colby Grant is a man who can no longer stomach living at home….watching his family slowly disintegrate as the tragedies that have befallen them tear them apart instead of bringing them closer.  He is a man who dreams of a career in music, but Colby Grant is not just any man…he’s a man who wants to be part of Hensley’s life at any cost.

Because when something is mine, I own it and protect it.  Hensley, I want your mind, body and soul.  Let me have it, and I promise there will be nothing to be scared of ever again.  You want to sing, I want you to.  You want to serve tables forever I want you to.  I will not, ever, stop you from living your dream.  I just want to be part of it.

Hensley and Colby, along with their friend Dusty, meet, bond and develop as musicians.  Their big break comes when they are “discovered” while performing at a club by representatives of a record company .  The plot twists that develop after their discovery will have readers pulling their hair and shaking their heads!

In the Lyrics’ story drew me in from the beginning.  Throughout the book I continuously wanted more.  I wanted more of the characters’ back story, more of their story after they were discovered and more of the story of salvation, healing and reconciliation as the book moved toward its conclusion.  The narrative seemed hurried at times.  More details would have changed it from being a good story to an amazing story.  I’m not a big fan of series with cliffhangers, but I can definitely see In the Lyrics benefiting from the trilogy format with each of the three distinct periods of the story being developed into a book of its own.

Fans of Nacole Stayton will definitely enjoy this book.  It is a quick read with a compelling story.  It is well-written, just as I would expect from this author, but I think many of her fans will finish the book, as I did….wanting more.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book directly from the author.  I was not paid to read or review this book.  All opinions are my own, and I was never influenced by anything or anyone.
