We are not guaranteed anything, not even this life.

Rivers Young is the popular guy untouchable by reality. He is like a star—bright, consuming, otherworldly. The thing about stars, though, is that they eventually fall, and he is no different.

He falls far and he falls hard.

Delilah Bana is the outcast enshrouded in all of life's ironies. Alone, in the dark, like dusk as it falls on the world. When Rivers hits the ground, she is the night that catches him. In the darkness, they meld into something beautiful that shines like the sun.

Only, the greater the star is, the shorter its lifespan.

Unlit Star by Lindy Zart is writing brilliance. I honestly don’t know if I should love or hate my blog mate Michelle Eck for introducing me to this book, as it has gutted me, and I don’t know if my heart will ever recover from this tale of life seen through the eighteen-year-old heart of Delilah Bana.

Delilah Bana is every woman; she is the spark of light in the dark. She is melody in the song that is life. She is lightening in the storm. She is the butterfly chasing pollen from flower to flower. She is the girl who isn’t afraid to fly too close to the sun, as getting burned is part of life. She lives life to it’s fullest and she can see the beauty and the nuisances of even the underbelly of life. She loves hard and she loves to her fullest. Some including herself might call her a bleeding heart, as she wants to heal the world, or the part of the world that she touches.  Some readers might think she is closed off, but until you walk in Delilah’s shoes, don’t judge.  Trying to heal the world doesn’t come without obstacles or her own hurts, but this is a soul that will persevere. I don’t think I have been more in love with a character than Delilah; and as I write this review; I am a better person for meeting fictional Delilah and being part of her journey and the journey of the boy she helps to save–Rivers.

How to classify this book is daunting. I could use the word inspirational romance; but that doesn’t seem powerful enough for Delilah and Rivers’ story.  The story is soul changing, not just the characters souls, but their stardust sprinkled onto mine too. Few books have made my heart sing, and this one the orchestra struck and my heart played the cords.

I hate giving plot points away in reviews, but when these two characters make up lives for strangers around them; those moments just made me giddy.  Those moments are so very poignant and so very heartfelt, that my heart nearly exploded.

Ms. Zart has ganged a reader for life, and everyone in the world should read Unlit Star, as it is perfection.
