They want him dead and her enslaved . . .
Texas . . . the heart of a territory that stretches from the golden deserts of New Mexico to the turquoise shores of the Florida Keys. It's big, it's rich, and it's the next battleground for some of the most dangerous vampires in the world.
Christian Duvall . . . charismatic and powerful, and determined to claim the South as his own. But with old enemies and new fighting to stop him, victory suddenly takes on a brutal, and far more treacherous, edge. Because what one of his enemies wants more than anything else already belongs to Christian . . . and her name is Natalie.
Natalie Vivant Gaudet . . . brilliant and lovely, a strong Southern woman who can unravel the most intricate financial schemes designed to swindle and steal. She loves her complex job and the simplicity of her life. And then she meets Christian. He's beautiful, he's complicated, and she'll fight to keep him alive.
With allies trying to kill him, and enemies readying a horde of zombie vampires to roll over all of Texas, it will take every shred of Christian's power and Natalie's determination to win this war and give North America a brand new Lord of the South.

In the Vampire in America series by D.B. Reynolds, I purposely did not read past Duncan so that I could see how the author’s newest book Christian flowed without prior knowledge of the events of the series.  I am glad to report that the author D.B. Reynolds does as fabulous job with this book and readers do not need to read the prior books to understand Christian and what vampire life is like in the Americas.  She gives enough backstory to the series without bogging the progress of the current book down.  Like her other titles this has a main HEA romance but the story has many layers and propels the overall series arc forward, while wrapping up the main plot of this particular book.  There are a few nuances because I have read the series that did not make sense to me as vampire males are very proprietary with the  females protagonist in the previous books, but in this one Christian suggest brining another male into the bed-sport of the couple

I actually enjoyed the series arc of the story more than I enjoyed the love story between Christian and the very forgettable Natalie.  Christian is the male protagonist that was written with depth and flavor, and he got to snack on a vanilla dull female protagonist in Natalie.  Christian was a very bright star, and in my opinion was saddled with a female protagonist who stalled the story with her own stupidity.

There are a few nuances because I have read the series that did not make sense to me as vampire males are very proprietary with the  females protagonist in the previous books, but in this one Christian suggest brining another male into the bedsport of the couple.  This is against established series canon, and did cause me to rate this book lower, despite the very good writing of Reynolds.

In total the series is a very good read especially for those who like action with the vampires.
