“Do you ever let go, storm girl?” he asked. “Ever lose control? Ever surrender?”

“Never,” I whispered. “I never surrender.”

A smile of both promise and warning curved his beautiful mouth.

“You will.”

Atmospheric scientist Kelsey March is under siege. Her tornado research project is on the skids and she’s fighting conflict in her university department. So when irresistible bad boy Archer West suggests a hot, wild fling while he’s in town, Kelsey is unable to resist his sexy offer.

Kelsey and Archer embark on a intense, exhilarating affair. But soon their differences and private battles encroach on their desire, and Kelsey discovers she is caught in a storm she can’t control…

BREAK THE SKY is a standalone Spiral of Bliss spin-off novel from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Nina Lane.

It is no secret that Nina Lane instantly became one of my favorite authors when she gave us Dean and Liv’s story. I immediately fell in love with her beautiful and superb writing style. There is just something so special about how she brings her characters to life and the undertone and themes that are recurrent in this spectacular Spiral of Bliss series. Break the Sky is a standalone, spin-off novel of that series and it is the story of Archer West and Kelsey March. Two very intriguing people who couldn’t be more different in the way they lead their lives. But the old saying holds true, especially here, opposites do attract, and by attract I mean Archer and Kelsey sizzle when they are in the same room.

“This is between you and me,” he said. “Yeah, I’m a fuck-up. I’ve been one my whole life. I’ve screwed with people. Gotten in plenty of trouble. But you think that’s it, you’re wrong. And if you want to know about me, you don’t let anyone else tell you. You deal with me.”

From the moment he gave her that little speech, I knew, just knew with my whole heart that there was so much more to Archer West than what I had imagined him to be in the glimpses we got in the previous books. He showed a softer side with Liv before and I had high hopes for him when I saw that Break the Sky would be about Archer and Kelsey. He absolutely did not disappoint. The moment his presence was made, he staked a claim on my heart. Archer has forever been the black sheep of the family, always the screw up, always in his successful brother’s shadow, and has never had anything positive in his life to hold on to. So when he finds himself in Mirror Lake, his sense of displacement is obvious, it’s uncomfortable, and yet there was something about him that tugged at my heart, like there was this really good man underneath the surface just waiting for the right moment to make an appearance.

“I’m disappointed in you,” I continued, tracking my gaze down to the V of her neck. “I thought you were the kind of woman who’d form your own opinions about things. But if we’re doing this based on second impressions, and if I’m the fuck-up who screws with people, then you must be the controlling bitch who hasn’t gotten laid in years.”

Kelsey on the other hand is a brilliant assistant professor up for tenure. She is a no bullsh#%, straight shooter who makes men quiver. She is also happens to be best friends with Dean West, who we know is Archer’s brother. She is in a dry spell when it comes to men.  She hasn’t felt any real attraction to anyone in a long time until one night when a sexy stranger sweeps into her life.  Said sexy stranger makes another appearance, only this time it’s at the university, in the office of her best friend Dean, and oh yeah, he’s Dean’s brother. Awkward! From that moment, when their eyes meet, oh my God, can Nina make the simplicity of gazing ignite! Of course Kelsey now wants nothing to do with Archer despite what her body and fast beating heart are telling her. She feels this insane attraction to a man she knows is not good for her. What happens now? Well, these two put on their game faces and go! Archer wants her and he is quite clear about it. She thinks she needs to resist, but can she? And so it begins…

“Oh God.” I pulled my mouth from his with a groan “All right, all right. I give in.”

“Don’t give in,” he murmured, brushing his mouth against my lower lip. “Give over.”

Needless to say, if you thought Dean West was hot, Archer West will blow your mind. This book is sexy, sultry, raw, passionate, yet it has such a lyrical tone to it that you will find yourself immersed in this world that makes these Spiral of Bliss novels come to life. Mirror Lake has never looked so good and it is where all the action is happening. Nina Lane does a fantastic job in making the reader fall for Archer, not only because he is hot as hell, but because deep down we know he is worthy of love, he is worthy of finding happiness, despite what his life in the past may want to dictate. Same goes for Kelsey, she thinks she can’t do love, but Archer West will prove her so very wrong. What starts off as just sex, quickly turns into one of most exquisite love stories of late. The way Nina continues to tie in The Alice in Wonderland theme and adds in a little bit of Oz with the tornados and storm chasing, make this book unique and beyond special.  Fall in love with these characters, revisit past favorites, and let yourself believe in second chances, in fate, and mostly, in the power of love.

“Do you always let fate make decisions for you?”

“Fate makes better decisions than I do.”

SynopsisFrom the New York Times bestselling author of Into the Deep

Charley and Jake’s story concludes in Out of the Shallows…

Somehow, after everything they’ve been through, Jake Caplin and Charley Redford made their way back to one another. But finding each other and staying together are two completely different things.

When Charley’s world is flipped upside down, she begins to question the choices and decisions she’s made since her arrival in Edinburgh, and in an effort to grip onto what she holds most dear she believes she must sacrifice her love for Jake.

Returning to the States for her senior year, Charley struggles to find peace and happiness. While everyone else seems to be finding themselves in college, Charley is terrified that, along with almost everything else that’s important to her, she’s lost herself.

While friends and family deal with their own tumultuous lives, there is one person resolved to uncover the reason behind Charley’s sudden defection and unhappiness. Refusing to give up without a fight, Jake believes he is the only one who can truly understand what Charley is going through, and this time he’s determined to prove he’s there for her no matter what obstacles are thrown in their way.

However, as Charley strives to make it through the biggest personal journey of her life thus far, there is no guarantee that the woman she is becoming will still need Jake as much as the girl she once was did…

*** Yesi’s Review ***

4 out of 5 stars

This was by far one of my most anticipated books for 2014 so when I finally got it in my hands I immediately began reading. Once I started, I did not put it down and at 3am my eyes were droopy, but my heart was racing and my mind was blown! That is all on Samantha Young. She is a storyteller like no other. She brings so much depth to her characters and her writing style is brilliant. Jake and Charley are two very complex characters and she brings them to life beautifully in this series. When she released the official blurb I knew in that instant that this book was going to take me on an emotional ride and that my heart was going to hurt along the way. At the time, I just didn’t know how much.

“We love each other so we can hurt each other, but I am making a promise to do everything I can not to hurt you again. I want that promise from you.”

Hmmm…yeah…hurting they did and hurting I was. At the end of Into the Deep we are left with Charley and Jake in a somewhat happy state. They are together and are in love. Yes, there is hesitation on Charley’s part and she was totally in her right. So when Out of the Shallows begins I have to say that I was shocked at where they were at that particular stage in their life and relationship. I will admit that I did not see this storyline coming but whether it is what I wished for or not, it was told in such a way that I was immediately sucked in. I wanted to know why and how this could be. I could not read fast enough. Just like Into the Deep, OOTS goes back and forth between the past and the present and if I thought book 1 was full angst, it had nothing on this one. My heart just ached but there was promise that by the end it would be fully healed.

“It sucks at first, but it gets better.”

For me, this sums up exactly how I was feeling about Charley and Jake throughout this book. I loved Charley but I wanted to shake her and smack some sense into her. I questioned the choices she was making. I loved Jake and as much as I wanted him to grovel in this one, I think he got it much worse. The one thing that was never in question was their love for one another and that made me happy even during the tough times. This story will simply consume your life in the time that you are reading. There is so much to love about it and there is so much to feel sad about too. The times that Jake and Charley are together are beautiful and sexy as hell. The times that they are apart are sad and almost anger inducing. Such an emotional roller coaster and I cannot rave enough about how the story was brought to life. Samantha Young has once again made me fall in love with the two leading characters but also with their friends. Beck and Claudia are scene stealers in this one but in such a good way. Lowe, he still has my heart and I will hold out hope for his own story to be written. Actually, all the men from The Stolen deserve their own HEA. So my recommendation would be to go into this book with an open mind, with full trust that Samantha Young will give her characters the ending they deserve, and with the notion that a great story will be told in a magnificent manner.

“I will never love anyone the way I love you. You’re part of me. You make me feel like I can be anyone, do anything… but you also have the ability to make me feel weak. You have the ability to crush me like no one else can.”

ExcerptI couldn’t actually dispute any of that, which made me even more pissed, hurt, defensive, scared and … confused.
I started to shiver. “I … I can’t do this.” I turned away.
I hadn’t taken two steps when I felt his hand wrap around my wrist. Jake tugged me, forcefully, pulling me around so I stumbled into his chest. His lips crashed down on mine, his kiss hungry, desperate, angry …
For a moment I forgot everything else but the hard pressure of his mouth on mine, the smell of his cologne, the feel of his body. I was surrounded.
And I let it happen.
His lips moved from my mouth to my chin, along my jaw, as his hand slid up my waist, his thumb just grazing my breast. I sighed, my body arching into his. I was hot. Hot and wanting. Nothing else mattered but the way I felt when he touched me.
His voice was ragged in my ear. “I’ve missed you so much. I love you so fucking much.” He squeezed my waist and pulled me closer, his mouth reaching for mine again but those three little words had broken through the spell of lust created by Jake’s proximity and the four beers I’d had.
“Stop,” I whispered, pushing gently on his chest.

Guest Post & Giveaway: Journey to Faith by Tina Klinesmith

Author: Tina Klinesmith

Genre: Christian Fiction/Romance

Publication Date: April 15, 2014

Cover Designer: Allison Brennan

~ Synopsis ~

Michele and David have it all: successful careers, a loving marriage and the perfect daughter. Until the past raises its head, intent this time on wrecking damage to their daughter. When tragedy strikes, they find their faith in God and His plans tested. Can their family remain strong in the face of adversity or will they crumble in ruins? Will love fail them when they need it most or will it restore their faith in what the future holds?

Six Words To Describe the Book

Fear: Actions, right and wrong, are most often driven by fear whether as simple as peer pressure or as complicated as losing life as you know it. Michele, David, Faith and Declan each face their fears throughout.

Hope: While fear motivates the action, hope gives confidence to continue moving forward in the face of fear, even when all appears lost. Hope, in spite of tragedy, is what lifts spirits and brings beauty from the midst of catastrophe.

Faith: Besides the obvious character in the story, faith is a central theme. Believing, with certainty, what you hope for will be accomplished because you know, in your heart, Who you believe in is far more important than any outward evidence.

Endurance: When faced with trials, it’s easy to grow weary. Michele and Faith handle their struggles in completely different ways but neither gives up. They continue to press forward in the face of exhaustion.

Understanding: This is where Declan and Micah excel. Both have been in similar positions to where Michele, David and Faith now find themselves and have survived. Neither shies away from offering a supportive shoulder, using their pasts to walk alongside, sharing the burden.

Love: Throughout the story, love emerges. Even as it evolves and changes, morphing into something greater, it moves beyond the boundaries of the family unit leaving a legacy.

~ Synopsis ~

But when his actress girlfriend breaks his heart, he moves to L.A. to try his hand at acting. He’s not looking for love—he just needs to make a change.

Aerie Daniels is a woman in control … until she meets Jagger. Her surprising connection with him leaves her dazed and it’s unlike anything she’s ever felt. But just when she lets her walls fall, she makes a startling discovery about Jagger that breaks her fragile heart into a million pieces.

To keep from losing the woman who’s changing his world, Jagger is willing to give up anything—including his career. But even that might not be enough to regain Aerie’s shattered trust…

 ~ Review ~

Let me start by saying if you haven’t read Connected  and Torn, books 1 and 2 in this series, you absolutely MUST!! Though not necessary to read Dazed, they are just so amazing, I feel I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you that you are missing out on an epic story if you don’t add them to your TBR list. Back to Dazed. I really loved this story!! Jagger Kennedy is funny, sweet, and HOT!! Aerie Daniels is strong, guarded and also funny. I liked her the minute we met her in Connected, book 1 of the series. I was very happy to hear she’d be getting her own story. Author Kim Karr’s writing is fantastic. Dazed can be read as a stand alone. It is complete, no cliffhanger.

Aerie Daniels is on her way to visit Dahlia and River. Dahlia is her best friend.  She decides to bring dessert. At the cupcake place, she bumps into Jagger but doesn’t get his name. Although, he gets the cupcakes she was eyeing up. Coincidentally enough, it turns out her sexy cupcake thief is River’s cousin and is also at the house for dinner.  The chemistry between them is palpable. The tension is thick. It surprises Aerie how visceral her response is to Jagger.

“The things his touch does to me. I don’t know if I should melt away out of embarrassment or jump for joy out of elation.” ~ Aerie Daniels

Oh, Aerie!! Do it!! Just jump for joy!! But, Aerie’s been hurt before and not one to let her guard down or lose control. Jagger has something though, that tears down her defenses and has her trying new things. Everything seems to be going so well. Until, she finds out something that leads her to believe he hasn’t been completely honest. Will she let that destroy what they’ve started to build or will she give him a chance to prove her doubts and fears are unfounded?

Jagger is looking for more than life as a model. He is getting ready for what could be his big break. He hadn’t counted on meeting Aerie and feeling what he feels for her. It’s intense. From what he can tell, she feels the same way but is wary. Just when things are going good, a blast from his past threatens it all. He’s willing to give it all up for Aerie. The question is, will she let him?

“Do you have any idea how much I want you right now!” he growls not meaning for it to be a question. ~ Jagger Kennedy

Dazed  has everything a great romance should have. Sexy hero and beautiful heroine that are each strong, well developed characters. There is a perfect amount of angst, personal past baggage, and very steamy sex scenes. It hooked me immediately and didn’t let me go until I was done. This is a quick, light read that will have you falling in love with Jagger and Aerie. You will be rooting for them to get their HEA. Kim Karr does not disappoint. Fans of the Connections series and new readers, alike will love this story. I wish it were longer because I really fell for Jagger Kennedy! What a doll!! Highly recommend this novella!!

~ Excerpt ~

Aerie Daniels

There’s something deliciously perverse about staring through the clear glass. All of my senses engage as I wait in line—the fragrance that fills the air as the fire crackles beneath the foil wrapped treats wafts under my nose, the beauty in each and every small package as they line the shelves with tiny dots and colored sprinkles mesmerizes me, the sound made as the silver sheet is peeled back to reveal the magnificence it holds captivates me, and the anticipation of the taste makes my mouth water. Ummm… just thinking of the first bite into the moist brown exterior with its bittersweet Belgian chocolate complimenting the flavor of the Madagascar bourbon vanilla that oozes from its inside has me trembling. The black and white cupcake—it’s simply perfection. Amidst the skyscrapers in Los Angeles’ South Park neighborhood, Sprinkles is a gem tucked away for those of us who seek out a small piece of heaven. I don’t come here often, but when I do it’s for that one special treat. The menu describes it as, “Yin and Yang.” An ancient proverb that says, “Complementary opposites, such as light and dark, day and night, and masculine and feminine, seemingly may exist as contrary forces, but are actually interconnected.” Simply put, it says one gives rise to the other and it’s true— opposites attract. Without the vanilla inside, one could not possibly crave the chocolate outside—looking at the two parts united has me drooling.

“You know what they say about staring through the glass,” a deep husky voice says from behind me. His words tingle my skin and my gaze snaps up.

“Excuse me?” I stop short, in a daze, not even sure what he just said I was so lost in my thoughts.

He chuckles. “You know what they say about staring through the glass,” he repeats.
My eyes blink and come into focus on the upward tilt of his full lips. Then my eyes move to his smooth pale skin flecked with a light stubble, his nose seemingly sculpted even with a slight imperfection in its slope, large eyes with the most unusual gray color swirling from within, and chocolate brown colored hair framing his face in pieces—I’m not sure if he has just rolled out of bed or if product molds it just so. Either way, he is utterly beautiful. “I’m sorry, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Just be careful so you don’t fall in like Alice.” He smiles, displaying his bright white teeth.

“Again, I’m sorry but I have no idea what you’re talking about.” I notice his eyes sweep over me and my heart starts pounding.

“Through the Looking Glass,” he responds in a dangerously husky voice.  This time when he speaks I catch an accent, ever so slight but extremely sexy.  It reminds me of how Robert De Nero talks, just not as loud or fast. I continue to stare, unable to respond. I notice that his physique is long and lean. He’s dressed in worn jeans that fit him perfectly. His orange laced hiking boots scream I don’t conform. A pair of tortoiseshell sunglasses hang from the V of his gray sweater, which clings to his body perfectly. And an outdoor vest tops the outfit. It throws me off. It makes him look more like an Abercrombie model than a James Dean type. It’s a navy blue down and quilted one with a silver zipper. I don’t know why, but something about his outfit, about this man, captivates me.

“Number 98,” calls the girl from behind the counter. He steps closer. His warm breath whispers across my neck.

“Through the Looking Glass is the sequel to Alice in Wonderland. When Alice gets too close to the glass, she falls in and starts on a crazy journey,” he tells me as his arm waves in the air with a green ticket on display. Stepping closer, his gaze cuts from mine to the glass case as he hands his number to the clerk whose wearing a cute brown apron with the word Sprinkles scripted across it.  “Can I have a dozen of the black and white cupcakes?” he asks.
Suddenly alarmed, my eyes dart to the case as I watch the single remaining row of beautifully crafted cupcakes diminish until there are none left. My irritation flares as I glance at my number—97. The beautiful stranger hands the clerk his credit card and waits to sign the slip.  “I was number 97, my number was before yours,” I say as he’s handed the bag that holds his treasure.

“Oh, I’m sorry. Here let me get the sales clerk’s attention so you don’t have to take another number,” he says.  I want to stomp my feet. I want to scream. I don’t want her attention. I don’t want another number. I want the cupcakes that he stole from me. “Miss,” he calls draping his perfectly fit body over the case. She looks his way and with a charming grin he says, “Can you help this lovely lady? She missed her number being called.” “Of course, I’m so sorry. How can I help you?” the girl asks averting her eyes from the man who looks like he should be on the cover of GQ magazine, over to me.

He smiles at me with a face that belongs on a billboard. “Don’t fall in.”  I swear he’s goading me. But then he tips his chin and a sexy, smoldering grin passes over his lips and I’m not so sure anymore. He turns to look at me one more time before he exits, and excitement flushes over my face. I nod a slight cursory acknowledgement, then he disappears and disappointment washes over me—he’s gone. Crap. The cupcakes are also gone. Double crap. And now I’m left wondering if he saw me staring at that flavor? Did he distract me on purpose so he could purchase them first? Urrr…I’m so angry right now I consider walking out, but when the clerk asks me what I’d like I settle for the Vanilla Milk Chocolate cakes—they are the mirror reflection of the black and whites, with vanilla cake and chocolate frosting, but they are not nearly as good.

The Future of Our Past (Book 1)
Don’t Forget to Remember
(Book 2)

An exclusive excerpt from A Love Like This:

“Is your husband that dear Dr. Ryan?”

I smiled brightly. “Yes! Do you know him?”

“He’s a sweetie. He buys Vogue every month at the gift shop and gives it to me. Of course, I thought it strange, such a virile young man reading a woman’s magazine, but he explained that his wife works there.” Acknowledgement dawned on her face, pale with too much powder than punctuated with too much blush. “You?” She pointed a long, bony finger at me, and smiled.

I nodded, my cheeks infused with heat. “Guilty. I didn’t know he bought it, though. It may be because I don’t bring copies home. Work intrudes enough.”

The woman smiled, her bright red, Marilyn Monroe-esque lipstick a stark contrast to her pale skin. “She’s been moved out of critical care; in room 511 dear. You go right on up.” She waved me toward the steel doors of the elevators to our left. “Say hello to your handsome husband for me, if he’s here.”

“I expect that he is. It was very nice to meet you…” I hesitated.

“Oh, Louise. But Ryan calls me Louie. Now, don’t be jealous, honey.” Her light blue eyes sparkled from her jovial expression.

I couldn’t help but giggle. “I won’t. It’s so nice to meet you, Louie!”

Author: Anne Whitney
Genre: Contemporary Romance/New Adult

Book description:

Marina Phillips has spent her entire life as her father’s victim. But enough is enough. All it took was one moment of realization to send her fleeing across the country into the unknown of New York City with no plans and no money. A new life without the constant torture is all she wants, but what she finds waiting is something she never expected.

Fitz is New York’s premiere playboy artist. Sexy, tattooed, and coveted by women and men alike, his performances are heralded as the coming of a new god of modern art. But when Marina wanders into his show, she becomes the inadvertent piece he’s always waited for – a girl to sculpt, to change, and to craft in his own image.

She never expects to fall head over heels into the world of parties, drag queens, agents, and artists craving for her and her benefactor. She didn’t even expect to begin falling in love with someone like Fitz, the sexy, pretentious man of her nightmares.

Above all, Marina never expects her father to stage a cross-country mission to paint her as a kidnapped girl taken by a psychopath.

With her life on the line, Marina has no choice but to accept Fitz’s proposal – change everything she is, inside and out, for the chance to start anew. But Marina has plans of her own. Plans that will rock her world forever.

Interview with Anne Whitney

1. What’s a typical day like in the life of Anne?
I wish I could say something much more fun and glamorous here but it’s the same old work, rest and play routine most of us live by. I do all my writing in the evening after work (although I have been known to do some quick note taking in my lunch break) curled up in my chair with my laptop. Usually, blankets and hot drinks are also involved. Hot drinks are occasionally switched with alcohol! When I’m not writing or I’m trying to do anything but write, I like to read, bake and gorge myself on DVD boxsets. Right now I’m all about Game of Thrones.

2. Who or what inspired you to become a writer?
Like pretty much every writer ever, I’m a die-hard reader and have been for as long as I can remember. I’ve always enjoyed telling stories and filling my head with crazy and fantastical scenarios but I’m a bit of a flake who has trouble finishing things so never thought I’d become a proper writer. Luckily, I managed to stick with a story and The Art of Love was born!

3. Do you remember the first thing you ever wrote?
I don’t know if it was the first one but I remember writing a piece as a 7 year old on a little girl who bought a budgie. It was basically a shopping list of all the things you would need to buy before getting a budgie. It got a sticker from my teacher. Take that, Pulitzer Prize!

4. Is there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way, either growing up or as an adult?
I’m a sci-fi girl all the way and my favorite writers are Connie Willis, Neil Gaiman and Margaret Atwood. They’re like the trifecta of literary awesome that fuelled my desire to be a real writer. Gaiman’s now famous speech on making good art is basically my motivational speech (well, that and “I’ll Make a Man Out Of You” from Mulan!).

5. Where do you get your ideas from? Do they come to you or are they inspired by true events?
I have no idea where they all come from. Some are inspired by ideas or my favorite things, others just pop into my head at the worst possible times and I just have to write them down somewhere or lose my mind!

6. Do you work with an outline or just write?
I have an outline but it’s not too rigid. I like to give myself some wriggle room just in case I spontaneously decide to go off the beaten path and let the story run wild. I absolutely must know how a story ends before writing anything because otherwise it’ll just meander pointlessly.

7. Do you ever experience writer’s block? If so, how do you get out of the funk?
Oh yeah, all the time! Block is tough because it can really suck the energy and motivation out of you and it’s easier said than done when it comes to getting out of that funk. I try not to push myself too hard to get out of it because I know I’ll get out of it eventually, it’s just waiting that’s hard. Usually I just make myself a nice cup of tea (or something stronger), find something that makes me happy, be in comics or a book or browsing Tate Modern’s website, and just immerse myself in joy until the funk passes.

8. Do you listen to music while writing? If so, what do you listen to?
I can’t write to silence, I find it far too distracting. I like to make playlists for my work – music that fits the mood of the story and stuff I can imagine the characters listening to. For The Art of Love I listened to everything from Die Antwoord to Kanye West to Bastille to STRFKR to Tove Stryke to RuPaul! When two of your main characters are a pretentious performance artist and a drag queen, you can get eclectic with  the music choices!

Art of Love

9. What inspired Art of Love?
I’m a total modern art nerd. I love it and I love talking about it (my family and friends, not so much). I was watching a documentary one day called “Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present”, which is about my favorite artist, the grandmother of performance art, and her retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art. She’s known for doing a lot of performances that focus on the body and the pretty painful things she does to herself. One piece, for example, involved carving a star into her own belly! I found it completely fascinating and wondered what kind of person you had to be to dedicate yourself entirely to something like that in the name of art, and what kind of person would fall in love with them. Lo and behold, Fitz and Marina were created (yep, the name choice is deliberate)! They’re also inspired by Abramovic’s relationship with her fellow artist and former partner Ulay.

10. How did you come up with the title? I think it’s perfect! :)
Thank you very much! I actually struggle with titles quite a bit. Originally it was going to be called Modern Love, which I basically stole from my god David Bowie, but decided against it for possible copyright infringement reasons. The Art of Love just came naturally the more I thought about it. I think in a really cheesy way, love is the ultimate performance piece, and it certainly is for Fitz!

11. What did you do to prepare yourself before writing AoL? Did you look at visual aids?
I read a lot of romance novels and watched a lot of movies! Well, I called it research, it may just have been procrastination. I also spent a lot of time looking up modern and performance art to decide what kind of art Fitz would work in. The book’s actually full of references to real pieces of modern art and the artists who created them. I think I may give a prize to the person who spots them all.

12. What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why? Hardest?
Writing the relationship between Fitz and Marina was definitely the hardest thing to write. I wanted it to progress naturally while not going too fast. Sometimes I just wanted to say “Dammit!” and rush to the sexy scenes! My favorite thing to write was probably the first scene between Fitz and Marina. It’s definitely not a struggle to write about a hot naked man! I also enjoy writing Derek so every scene he’s in was a joy for me. I’m planning on writing a book on Derek’s life and love so stay tuned!

13. Which character speaks/spoke the loudest to you?
Derek! Well, he’s the most fun to write but in terms of who I relate to most it’s a tie between Marina and Viridian. Feeling lost and unsure about your life while trying to keep up the facade of having it all is a struggle that’s all too familiar to me. I’m also prone to being brutally honest in the same way Viridian is, but my hair isn’t as cool as hers!

14. Which of your characters would you like to meet in person and why? What would you say to that person?
Once again, Derek! He knows how to have a good time and where all the parties are. I’d probably ask him to help me pick out something cool to wear and then we’d argue about queer culture while drinking woo-woos.

15. Why did you choose New York City as the book’s setting?
New York is the city of life and inspiration to me. It’s home to the MoMA among many other amazing art galleries and it’s where Andy Warhol’s Factory was. Marina wants to get lost, to be as far away from her father as possible, and to blend in with a huge crowd where nobody will find her, so New York felt like the natural destination.

16. Art is an important part in the story, almost its own character. What is your favorite thing about it? Maybe the different opinions (no one is alike, as you mentioned in the book), or the creation of something from scratch, etc.?
I love how divisive art can be. There’s this modern artist called Martin Creed who’s pretty controversial. He won the Turner Prize for modern art for an installation that was literally the lights turning off and on in an empty room. I find his work totally fascinating and can see the interpretations it offers, but I know plenty of people, including other artists, who think he’s a troll. Actually, I think he’s a troll as well but a troll with a point. I think anything and everything can be art and I get a real kick out of seeing something that someone has poured their heart and soul into. Art can change the world but it can also be completely ridiculous and that combination fascinates me.

17. Give us the 140 character TWEET description of your book! ;)
Love, passion, sex, fashion, secrets, friends, transformation – The ultimate masterpiece is finding yourself. Also, nudity.

18. Is there a message in your debut novel that you want readers to walk away with? If so, what is it?
It doesn’t matter what else goes on in the world, the most important thing you can do is love yourself, because, In the words of the inimitable RuPaul, if you can’t love yourself, how the hell are you gonna love somebody else? Can I get an amen?!

19. What project are you working on now?
I’m working on a couple of things right now, mainly a romantic comedy about a young woman’s sexual awakening through the oddest means possible (it’s funny, I swear) and Derek’s spin-off story where we get to see more of his life as a drag queen and his relationship with his closeted uptight boyfriend. Viridian’s also getting her own spin-off. I’m also planning to delve into sci-fi soon but that one will require lots of planning before I even begin the first sentence.

Smooches Showdown

1. Book or movie?
Books. I actually prefer TV to movies.

2. Superpower you wish you had?
I basically want to be Dr Jean Grey from X Men. Dark Phoenix Saga is optional.

3. GOB, Buster or Michael?
I’ve only recently gotten into Arrested Development. I can’t believe I was so late to the party! In terms of my favorite character out of those three it’s GOB (but overall it’s Lindsay).

4. Late night or early morning?
Late night. I’m barely human before noon.

5. Craziest thing in your fridge right now?
Strawberry flavored wine. Yummy!

6. If you were writing a book about YOUR life, what would the title be?
Still Waiting on Half-Life 3
