“I’m not sick and I’m not broken. I’m desolate, born empty, lacking a soul.” ~ Ryan
WOW….where Empathy (Book 1) blew my mind, Desolate left me rocking in the corner. Ker Dukey is amazing, gifted in the art of the total mindfuck!! This story is haunting, unlike anything I’ve read before. It is not for the faint of heart or those looking for hearts and flowers. This is not a romance. It is a dark, twisted, walk with evil and I LOVED IT!
The story picks up 18 years after the end of Empathy (Book 1). Ryan’s character has grown more cunning and manipulative. Author Ker Dukey paints a chilling portrait of a sociopath who evolved from disturbed teen to scary, cold, calculating adult. He has a new obsession, Cereus, his niece. But he still has deadly feelings for Melody. I’m not going to go into the storyline too much because I truly believe you need to read this blind, only knowing what author Ker Dukey shares in the synopsis. Suffice it to say, that although Ryan is released, he is far from cured of his sadistic proclivities or thirst for blood and torture, both physical and mental.
“I can almost taste the need to throw her world into chaos but my need for Cereus to not turn her back on me is more important…more important than anything else.” ~ Ryan
Could Cereus be Ryan’s salvation? His reason for redemption? Or is he truly empty and cold, devoid of all emotion, incapable of love as he claims? Author Ker Dukey had me holding my breath while reading. I had to stop many times while reading but I could not put my kindle down. Just when you think you have it figured out…BAM…curve ball from left field. Like a moth to a flame, I was captured by her words. Desolate is a heart stopping, mind-blowing, keep you guessing gritty, dark read. Amazing sequel to Empathy. These characters and this story will stay with you. A definite must read.
