Gargoyles were created centuries ago to protect mankind, but something went horribly wrong. Now only the sentinel—a mortal chosen to control the stone beasts—stands between them and their human prey.

When the latest sentinel is killed, Kate Mercer is destined to take his place. But Kate has enough going on in her life—like a skyrocketing film career, a delusional ex-boyfriend, and a crazed stalker who will stop at nothing to get to her. But the powers that be have decided, and Kate is transported to Shadow Wood, a mysterious castle that serves as a sanctuary for the supernatural. Although beautiful, Shadow Wood is no safe place for a mere mortal. Yet Kate is drawn not only to the gargoyles but also to Ian McGuire, a charming novelist who might be in the greatest danger of all.

As Kate decides whether to accept the most perilous role of her life, she discovers there are more secrets than answers within the castle’s walls. Her survival and Ian’s depend on her ability to master the gargoyles before time runs out. Is fate really cast in stone?

I’m not very active on Twitter, but the one day that I was led me to what would be an exciting new book and the beginnings of what I believe will be an interesting new series. I was enticed by the cover. A strong woman looking out into this new world, and beside her a gargoyle, a figure that would forever mark her new existence. After reading the synopsis, I was hooked.

Kate Mercer is a successful A lister movie star. She is a strong-willed independent actress whose film career started with the Dark Fall series. She craves adventure and performs her own stunts on film. I loved the fact that Kate’s character does not associate with the lavish lifestyle of Hollywood. The complete opposite can be said about her ex-boyfriend who annoyingly stalks her, trying to win her back in every possible way. It is her strength and her natural attraction to danger that act as a magnet, pulling the gargoyles toward her, and wanting Kate to be their new leader. She dreams of far-away places, a mansion, and of woods. It is a realistic dream that becomes all too real.

Ian is much like Kate, grounded and humble with his success. He a is paranormal/thriller writer who is inspired by the unnatural occurrences in Shadow Wood.  He is much more receptive to Declan and the other creatures residing at Shadow Wood estate. But Kate, for the most part is wary and indecisive about her proposed role as the new sentinel, the title held by the leader of the gargoyles.

The story is told from different characters point of view. There are many character in the book, but not too many that it would confuse the reader. For the most part however, the story is told through Kate and Ian’s POV. Naturally the reader gravitates towards the main characters, but I found myself very intrigued with Declan’s mysterious presence. I look forward to reading more about him in the author’s future works.
