Maybe this isn’t something a book blogger to cop to but I am a sucker for a pretty paranormal cover and this is the reason I requested the book Jinn and Juice from Orbit via Netgalley. Well if you are reading this review you are more than likely wondering if the book Jinn and Juice is worth you spending you hard earned money on. You know all of us here are Literati are not five star happy, we don’t all think everything is ‘Awesome’ or ‘I Loved It’ and not every book is the BEST BOOK EVER” You more than like want to know if it is worth the money will you plunk down on it. Yes we get free books from publishers and authors, but trust me a free book is not going to affect our reviewing integrity. You can ask some of the authors we personally know, I love them personally; but if they don’t hit the high note in their writing they are going to know about it. We stand behind what we write and we think you our readers, would rather have an honest review than one where we blow smoke up your fanny, cause we don’t want to offend an author. Books are products just like any other consumer product. Readers/consumers want their monies worth, so we really take what we do seriously. No we aren’t mean, but we aren’t going to gush about a book just cause we know the author.
So, back to my review and of Jinn and Juice by Nicole Peeler, first off this is a boisterous urban fantasy book. The characters are hilarious, and the book is written from the point of view of Lyla, the jinni. This girl has been around the block a time or two, she looks good for going on one thousand. Lyla is surrounded by friends that are both outrageous and lovable, and fit well into her never ending life. They are all magical beings in one way or another, and the introduction to them is fast and I felt that I had known the characters forever; that is how well they are written. The girl is excited, cause soon she is going to start living her life. What….. a thousand year old woman not living her life. Okay let me back up Lyla is under a curse, but the curse as an expiration date; which is fast approaching, which means freedom for Lyla, no more doing the dirty deeds for others as a jinni. The best laid plans and all that mean that her almost new lease on life is stopped in it’s tracks by Oz the Magi. Whoopsy….. Be careful what you wish for Lyla!
The adventure was fun, and I was pulled immediately into the chase by Peeler’s writing. Her world is fresh, fun, and her characters are ballsy and loyal. Lyla’s nemeses sort of is Oz, who I fell in love with; he was so sweet, and totally the anti-alpha male. Which isn’t a bad thing, if you didn’t miss it I adored him. I always was a sucker for an anthropologist. Oz is a ‘good guy’ and he is just yummy. The reason he is her nemeses, is because he becomes her Master. As Lyla has only wanted to be free!
So now we are to the point of tell you, that yes spend your money. The romance is on the level of the fabulous Kristen Painter, there is making out but no intercourse, but honestly some writers have more sizzle with a kiss than some do with a full on sex scene. Peeler characters sizzle with something that isn’t lacking in her story emotional connections.
