Emma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled series, returns with the first installment of the Legal Briefs series!

A Washington, DC, defense attorney, Stanton Shaw keeps his head cool, his questions sharp, and his arguments irrefutable. They don’t call him the Jury Charmer for nothing—with his southern drawl, disarming smile, and captivating green eyes, he’s a hard man to say no to. Men want to be him, and women want to be thoroughly cross examined by him.

Stanton’s a man with a plan. And for a while, life was going according to that plan.

Until the day he receives an invitation to the wedding of his high school sweetheart, the mother of his beloved ten-year-old daughter. Jenny is getting married—to someone who isn’t him.

That's definitely not part of the plan.

Sofia Santos is a city-raised, no-nonsense litigator who plans to become the most revered criminal defense attorney in the country. She doesn’t have time for relationships or distractions.

But when Stanton, her "friend with mind-blowing benefits," begs her for help, she finds herself out of her element, out of her depth, and obviously out of her mind. Because she agrees to go with him to The-Middle-Of-Nowhere, Mississippi, to do all she can to help Stanton win back the woman he loves.

Her head tells her she's crazy...and her heart says something else entirely.

What happens when you mix a one-stop-light town, two professional arguers, a homecoming queen, four big brothers, some Jimmy Dean sausage, and a gun-toting Nana?

The Bourbon flows, passions rise, and even the best-laid plans get overruled by the desires of the heart.

“Young love is strong. First love is powerful. But what you don’t know when you’re young—what you can’t know—is how long life actually is. And the only dependable thing about it, besides death and taxes, is change.”  Stanton Shaw

Maria and Yesi’s Thoughts ~

Overruled is a book that is funny, sweet, sexy, a little angsty, and a whole lot entertaining. This is Stanton and Sophia’s story, but it is also Stanton and Jenny’s story. At first glance we think ugh, love triangle, and yes, for the most part it is, but not in the way you may be expecting. Stanton Shaw is not without flaws and that is what made this book so very, very good. While we wanted to shake him most of the time, we also wanted to hug him and hold on tight. Emma Chase writes the male POV like no one else. Her writing in the male perspective is very believable and wildly entertaining. We learned that first hand in Tangled when we fell for Drew Evans. Now, Stanton Shaw is the new hottie whose sole purpose to drives towards insanity! Dive in and enjoy the crazy fun ride!

Yesi

The beginning was sweet and endearing. Young love at its best.

Maria

Great first love My problem is that it felt unrealistic to me! Was he really that obtuse?!?!

Maria:

I like how we moved in time. Easy to follow

Yesi

The pacing was very well done. We got what we needed from the past and we moved on to the “good stuff” in the present.

Yesi

I liked that we were able to see why Jenny was so important to him and why she was in his life all of this time. Why he always saw her as the love of his life. If we hadn’t gotten that introduction I don’t think I would have loved him as much or understood him at all.

Maria

I agree with that! But come on! I even loved the friends with benefits fall for each other but the whole My Best Friends Wedding type vibe ruined it just a bit for me.

Yesi

I agree. He clearly had a wonderful woman right in front of him and he just couldn’t past Jenny getting married and that killed me. Sophia was a fantastic character, although I wanted to shake some some sense into her as well.

Maria

Loved her character but still really? For a successful smart attorney she accepts scraps?!

Yesi

Scraps…yeah, no! She deserved better and Stanton was clueless for most of the book!

Yesi

I wish she would have stood up for herself sooner rather than later. I get that she was his friend and she knew her position as a f*ck buddy but clearly she had feelings for him all along and she should stood up for herself sooner.

Maria

Exactly!!! I did love the banter and interaction between Drew and Stanton as well as the secondary characters.

Yesi

All of the characters made this a very entertaining book. I loved that we got a glimpse of college Drew and I loved his interactions with Stanton. I also loved the steamy moments with Sophia as well as the quiet moments when they would both get lost in their thoughts. I loved their friends in DC and his friends and family in Mississippi. I even liked Jenny and I really thought that I wouldn’t.

Maria

I like that he fights for her once he realizes duh he loves her.

Maria

I guess it shows how we all do stupid things in the name of love

Yesi

Absolutely! It is the main reason it was easy to keep holding out hope that he would wake up and see what was right in front of him all along.

Maria

Yes I did like Jenny. She knew what was up

Yesi

She totally knew. LOL!

Yesi

I think in the his heart he knew Sophia was the one. His thoughts about wanting to be with her at random times gave that away. For the reader, it was frustrating at times yet it still kept me fully invested in the story. I wanted a front row seat when he finally woke the hell up.

Maria

He did know!

Yesi

The scene with Jenni when he finally realizes who he wants is great and from then on I couldn’t read fast enough

Maria

He’d even think how hot it was with her not Jenni.

Yesi

Exactly! Which is the main reason why we both wanted to slap some sense into him!

Maria

He got jealous over Sophia not Jenni.

Yesi

Yes! And if that wasn’t a dead giveaway then I don’t know what was. He just needed to finally see it for himself.

Maria

He only went back for her because he thought he should and because of Presley, their daughter.

Maria

I guess he had to lose her to realize it.

Emma chase did a great job redeeming him because I was worried I wasn’t going to like him, but she made it work and work really good. LOL I also liked that she used dual pov in this one. It is my favorite and she switched effortlessly

Yesi

Stanton was funny, witty, and yes obtuse, but I LOVED him. Sophia was strong, smart, and beautiful. She deserved to be loved and be put first. Both leading characters made this book extra special. Plus, being able to get both of their perspectives made this book even better.

Maria

Yes! And Sophia with her curves was a great leading lady

 Maria

I agree he was hot and sexy with Sophia and sweet and romantic with Jenny.

Yesi

And of course HOT and SEXY is what I loved BEST!

Final thoughts…

Reads like a great chick flick, a rom com at its best. It left us satisfied yet wanting more, much more.
