Emma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled series, returns with a brand new funny, romantic, sexy story!
A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.
When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.
Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.
Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy and Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal’s office.
Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.
And that—that, I know how to do.

Maria’s Thoughts

Emma Chase writes a male POV like a boss! I absolutely LOVED Sustained, book 2 in her Legal Briefs series. I honestly liked it even better than the first book, Overruled. Jake Becker is the perfect hero. He is a self proclaimed manwhore with no desire to even become friends with a woman he has sex with, preferring the random hook up instead. I know, why would I like him? He’s cocky, arrogant, sexy as hell, smart and funny with a heart of gold even he didn’t know he had. He may be my favorite Emma Chase character, after Drew Evans in Tangled, of course. But make no mistake, Jake gives Drew a series run for his money.

“A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.”

Chelsea McQuaid is the heroine. I liked her too. She wasn’t annoying or weak, which I really like because there’s nothing worse than a whiny, needy female in my opinion. I like when the authors make women characters strong and independent but not always bitchy. She gives Jake a run for his money without even trying. He ends up entangled in her life after an incident leads him to her door because he’s trying to pay it forward and look out for a kid like someone did for him. It’snot insta-love either but their chemistry and attraction? Sizzling…smoldering…swoonworthy. It’s comical when they try to get together but when they do…scorching.

“Now I’m going to make you come. And it’s going to be every bit as f***ing good for me as it is for you. Probably better.”

It was a unique premise and written perfectly. This story had humor, drama, steam, yet was kinda realistic; especially with sexy times being interrupted by the needs of a child. Many of us know what that’s like!! I love how author Emma Chase writes Jake’s character. From his inner dialogue to his banter with friends and the way his relationship develops with Chelsea. How we, the readers, know that he’s falling for her before even he does. I must also include how much I loved the children’s active part in the story. They weren’t just props. They were integral to the plot development. My favorites were Rory and Reagan. The way Jake interacts with them melts my heart, makes me laugh and has my ovaries exploding.

“I want her- this fearless, stunning woman. And I want the kids. Those perfect, awful, amazing children- whom she loves with every inch of her soul. I want them to be mine. Mine to hold, mine to protect and teach. Their joy, their laughter, their love. I want to come home to it, bask in it, be the reason for it.”

Of course, his circle of friends is also important to the story and we are treated to many hilarious scenes involving Jake with them and at work. Don’t get me wrong, there are times in the book that I wanted to smack Jake!! Proving once again that author Emma Chase knows how to write men. She may just be the queen of RomCom!! This is book 2 in the series but it can be read as a standalone if you don’t mind some spoilers for book 1 and are ok with reading books out of order when they focus on other characters. It’s more like a spin off than continuation because it’s about Chelsea and Jake, not Stanton and Sofia. I highly recommend this book, especially if you like comedy with your romance. It is a great read!

About Emma Chase

By day, Emma Chase is a devoted wife and mother of two who resides in a small, rural town in New Jersey. By night she is a keyboard crusader, toiling away the hours to bring her colorful characters and their endless antics to life. She has a long standing love/hate relationship with caffeine.

Emma is an avid reader. Before her children were born she was known to consume whole books in a single day. Writing has also always been a passion and with the 2013 release of her debut romantic comedy, Tangled, the ability to now call herself an author is nothing less than a dream come true.
