Joe Goldberg is no stranger to hiding bodies. In the past ten years, this thirty-something has buried four of them, collateral damage in his quest for love. Now he’s heading west to Los Angeles, the city of second chances, determined to put his past behind him.
In Hollywood, Joe blends in effortlessly with the other young upstarts. He eats guac, works in a bookstore, and flirts with a journalist neighbor. But while others seem fixated on their own reflections, Joe can’t stop looking over his shoulder. The problem with hidden bodies is that they don’t always stay that way. They re-emerge, like dark thoughts, multiplying and threatening to destroy what Joe wants most: true love. And when he finds it in a darkened room in Soho House, he’s more desperate than ever to keep his secrets buried. He doesn’t want to hurt his new girlfriend—he wants to be with her forever. But if she ever finds out what he’s done, he may not have a choice...

listeningladyI have no idea where to begin with this review . . . if you read my Random Thoughts after reading Caroline Kepnes’ Hidden Bodies, then you already know I love this book. That whole statement just sounds wrong for some reason, but there you are: I love a book about  a sociopath, a serial killer, and I may be just a bit in love with the serial killer himself. I’m definitely in love with narrator Santino Fontana who performs Hidden Bodies as well as the first Joe Goldberg book, You. There! I’ve said it. Now I feel as though I should be off to some kind of group therapy meeting for those who can’t help loving actors portraying serial killers! If you are an Audible member, be sure to take advantage of the free download of The Voices of Joe: Caroline Meets Santino, a conversation between the author and the narrator about our favorite sociopath. But, please don’t judge him! Our man Joe is not a normal serial killer (did I just say that??). He’s attractive, witty, intelligent, even lovable! Joe has principles! He refuses to become like the shallow, narcissistic people he meets in Hollywood, people with “aspirations” who speak fluent #Hashtag, people whose lives are lived out through social media, and he absolutely WILL NOT take a bath in $25,000 worth of Veuve Clicquot even if it’s with a beautiful woman!

The paradox of Hidden Bodies is the way the author and the narrator make you love this guy whose go-to method of dealing with people he dislikes is to kill them. I wanted him to succeed, I didn’t want him to get caught, and now I want him to live happily ever after. This really makes me worry about myself! Prepare to laugh out loud as the award-winning Mr. Fontana portrays the characters Joe meets in his quest to find the elusive Amy Adam who broke his heart, stole his books, and now just needs killing. But Joe’s obsession with revenge cools when he finds true love, literally, in the form of Love Quinn, one of Los Angeles’ wealthy and elite.  He soon learns there is truth to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous line “The very rich are different from you and me.” What’s really different about Love is her brother Forty, the poster child for “pompous assholery”. And you guessed correctly if you connected their names with tennis!

If you enjoyed either the book or audio version of You, then by all means treat yourself to its sequel, Hidden Bodies.  I read Hidden Bodies first, then listened to the audio version and, believe me, the narrator lends a whole new dimension to this book. Be forewarned, you may fall in love with Santino Fontana as I did, or you might even fall in love with Joe Goldberg!?
