Harry Potter has never been the star of a Quidditch team, scoring points while riding a broom far above the ground. He knows no spells, has never helped to hatch a dragon, and has never worn a cloak of invisibility.
All he knows is a miserable life with the Dursleys, his horrible aunt and uncle, and their abominable son, Dudley—a great big swollen spoiled bully. Harry's room is a tiny closet at the foot of the stairs, and he hasn't had a birthday party in eleven years.
But all that is about to change when a mysterious letter arrives by owl messenger: a letter with an invitation to an incredible place that Harry—and anyone who reads about him—will find unforgettable. For it's there that he finds not only friends, aerial sports, and magic in everything from classes to meals, but a great destiny that's been waiting for him... if Harry can survive the encounter.

Dear Readers! Please don’t judge me because I’m apparently the last person in the world to read the Harry Potter series!  It was an honest mistake by someone who thought they were strictly children’s books and since I no long have children at home, I just didn’t get into them. Who knew? As is so often the case, a casual comment in a discussion with my fellow bloggers sent me scurrying to correct my oversight. The ladies were aghast at my ignorance and because I don’t want them to be ashamed of me, I downloaded the first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and was immediately catapulted into Harry Potter World. I was hooked, I was enchanted, I was bewitched as if by magic! Even though the story isn’t all happy, happy, joy, joy, this book made me smile a lot and even made me laugh out loud. I can’t help wondering what a person would have thought seeing me walking along on my treadmill, grinning foolishly?

Now to the best part! Narrator Jim Dale is charming! I don’t know if it is the subject matter or what, but he is utterly captivating as J.K. Rowling’s characters. I have several narrators I would count as favorites, but for this storyline and these characters, I can’t imagine anyone else who would have been better. I loved him as Harry, I loved him as the Hogwarts professors, I loved him as the bossy Hermione and Mr. Piggy, Dudley. Most of all I loved him as Hagrid whose dialogue made me smile over and over. Mr. Dale is no ordinary performer. In addition to his work as a narrator which includes recording all seven of the Harry Potter books, he is a songwriter and an accomplished stage, film, and television actor. I encourage you to follow this link to read about this distinguished artist’s career.

Even though I’m a latecomer to Harry Potter World, I want to jump on the bandwagon and encourage anyone else who has not entered Harry’s world to do so through the audiobook medium. If you have children who enjoy being read to, you need to purchase the audio versions of the books for them to hear. I think both they and you will be just as enchanted as I am!

About J.K. Rowling

Joanne Rowling, best known as J.K. Rowling, was born on July 31, 1965, in Yate, England. She adopted her pen name, J.K., incorporating her grandmother’s name, Kathleen, for the latter initial (Rowling does not have a middle name). A graduate of Exeter University, Rowling moved to Portugal in 1990 to teach English. There, she met and married the Portuguese journalist Jorge Arantes. The couple’s daughter, Jessica, was born in 1993. After her marriage ended in divorce, Rowling moved to Edinburgh with Jessica to live near her younger sister, Di. While struggling to support her daughter and herself on welfare, Rowling worked on a book, the idea for which had reportedly occurred to her while she was traveling on a train from Manchester to London in 1990. After a number of rejections, she finally sold the book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (the word “Philosopher” was changed to “Sorcerer” for its publication in America), for the equivalent of about $4,000. The book and its subsequent series chronicled the life of Harry Potter, a young wizard, and his motley band of cohorts at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The work was an international hit and the series has sold hundreds of millions of copies and was adapted into a blockbuster film franchise. Rowling is now Britain’s 13th wealthiest woman—wealthier than even the Queen.

On December 26, 2001, J.K. Rowling married anesthetist Dr. Neil Murray at the couple’s home in Scotland. They have two children together, David (born in 2003) and Mackenzie (born in 2005). Rowling has one child, Jessica (born in 1993), from her previous marriage.
