Bennie Rosato the founder of the Rosato & DiNunzio law firm hides her big heart beneath her tough-as-nails exterior and she doesn't like to fail. Now, a case from her past shows her how differently things might have turned out. Thirteen years ago, Bennie Rosato took on Jason Lefkavick, a twelve-year-old boy who was sent to a juvenile detention center after fighting a class bully. Bennie couldn't free Jason, and to this day it's the case that haunts her. Jason has grown up in and out of juvenile prison, and his adulthood hasn't been any easier. Bennie no longer represents those accused of murder, but when Jason is indicted for killing the same bully he fought with as a kid, she sees no choice but to represent him. She doesn't know whether or not to believe his claims of innocence, but she knows she owes him for past failures--of the law, of the juvenile justice system, and of herself. Forced to relive the darkest period of her life, Bennie will do everything in her power to get the truth, and justice.

I know that each of you has run across at least one book that affected you on a visceral level for one reason or another. Whether it opened old memories or described a character with whom you identified or was merely the recounting of a story of injustice or bad timing or a random quirk of Fate, something took the book beyond a nice story and made it personal for you. Corrupted by Lisa Scottoline is a book that touched my heart in so many ways. Bennie Rosato is the tough-skinned, hard-as-nails, no-holds-barred boss lady who heads up her own law firm and the Rosato and DiNunzio series. Hearing her portrayed as being as vulnerable as she is in this book left me completely undone. For anyone who has ever been bullied; for anyone who has ever suffered injustice at the hands of the “system”; for anyone who lost your mom or your dad when you were too young to be on your own; for anyone who has ever sacrificed the love of your life because it was the right thing for your family, Corrupted will strike a chord with you. Inspired by a real-life scandal, kids for cash, which took place in Luzerne County, PA, Ms. Scottoline uses her storyline to educate her readers about a tragedy that left many young lives in disarray.

Narrating Corrupted is the very accomplished actress Kate Burton who happens to be the daughter of the late Richard Burton and his first wife, the late Sybil Williams. With such a strong theatrical background, listeners won’t be surprised by the performance of this gifted reader. My heart broke as Ms. Burton performed the voice of Jason Lefkavick, the central character of the courtroom drama, at the age of twelve. She is equally heartwrenching as the older, bitter Jason who still retains some of the sweet, protective nature he possessed as a child.

A lot goes on in a courtroom that is dull to many people, but if you are a person who enjoys the sometimes tedious and often dramatic antics of trial lawyers, Corrupted will suit you just fine because Kate Burton gives a superlative performance of the courtroom dialogue. Although the ending lacks some that “What the heck?” factor I’ve come to expect from Ms. Scottoline, it is a surprising and very satisfying conclusion to a story that, at times, seems as though it can’t possibly have anything but a bad outcome.?
