WARNING: This is NOT your typical romance. The story of Jake & Abby contains disturbing situations, graphic violence, sex, strong language, drug use, and all types of abuse. Homeless, sleeping in a junkyard, and on the run from a system that has failed her over and over again, Abby meets Jake, a tattooed blue-eyed biker with secrets that rival her own. Two broken souls that can't be healed, they can't be saved. Abby and Jake have to decide if they can accept the darkness not only within one another, but within themselves. If they can accept each other for who they really are they might learn that love isn't always found in the light...

The Dark Light of Day is one of those kinds of books I only listen to or read occasionally: new adult, and dark new adult at that. The storyline is so dark it made me think “If this poor girl gets smacked around one more time, I’m going to have to put out a contract on somebody!” Except in the case of Abby Ford, I don’t have to do that because she is in love with a killer and he will gladly kill for her. But, I forgot . . . it’s dark and angsty and there will definitely be more darkness before the light of day making the title selection by author T. M. Frazier perfect.

One of the reasons I rarely select new adult books is because they tend to be populated with teenagers. I have nothing against teenagers . . . I was one once upon a time. It’s just that the characters often seem to be too young and shallow to have any depth. Well, there is nothing young and shallow about Abby Ford and Jake Dunn. As teenagers, each of them lived through Hell, and each of them has compensated in an unhealthy way. Abby has walled herself off to the point that any type of human touch causes her skin to burn and Jake kills people for a living.

There are two narrators for this book. Christian Fox, who is an experienced narrator of erotica, reads the prologue, then sort of drops off the face of the earth until the epilogue. I would have really liked to hear more from him, but the rest of the story is from Abby’s POV. The female narrator, Lucy Rivers, is good and I would certainly listen to other books read by her. She is very convincing as 17 year Abby who has never really been a child and as the grown-up Abby who has a child of her own. She also performs Southern accents well. She does have an occasional glaring mispronunciation which should have been caught by the production manager.

I highly recommend The Dark Light of Day to readers and listeners who like to walk on the dark side. It is T. M. Frazier’s debut novel from 2013 and she is an excellent writer who has gone on to write 10 + books.  I was very caught up in Jake’s and Abby’s story even though this genre isn’t  my favorite and I would definitely read other books by this author. By the way, I think the cover for the audiobook is beautiful!
