Casey Duncan is a homicide detective with a secret: when she was in college, she killed a man. She was never caught, but he was the grandson of a mobster and she knows this crime will catch up to her. Casey's best friend, Diana, is on the run from a violent, abusive ex-husband. When Diana's husband finds her, and Casey herself is attacked shortly after, Casey knows it's time for the two of them to disappear again.
Diana has heard of a domestic violence support town made for people like her, a town that takes in people on the run who want to shed their old lives. You must apply to live in Rockton and if you're accepted, it means walking away entirely from your old life, living off the grid in the wilds of Canada: no cell phones, no Internet, no mail, no computers, very little electricity, and no way of getting in or out without the town council's approval. As a murderer, Casey isn't a good candidate, but she has something they want; she's a homicide detective, and Rockton has just had its first real murder. She and Diana are in. However, soon after arriving, Casey realizes that the identity of a murderer isn't the only secret Rockton is hiding - in fact, she starts to wonder if she and Diana might be in even more danger in Rockton than they were in their old lives.
An edgy, gripping crime novel from bestselling writer, Kelley Armstrong, City of the Lost boldly announces a major new player in the crime fiction world.

Many thanks to Lover Karen for bringing this book to my attention. This is not my first Kelley Armstrong book, but it is the first that isn’t paranormal. Before all you “things that go bump in the night” junkies stop reading, let me say I don’t think you will be too disappointed to find that all the characters are real people who lack supernatural powers because these people are not like you and me and the fact that they lack supernatural powers doesn’t keep some of them from being downright creepy. Now then, I hope I have your attention so I can go on to say City of the Lost is a compelling listen. It’s a mystery, it’s a thriller, and it’s a bit of a police procedural.  There are fallen angels of every description from deliberate and accidental criminals to a serial killer and the mob. There is also just enough romance to cut through most of the crazy weirdness that goes on in the fictional town of Rockton, a place you don’t get to visit unless you have something to hide or someone to hide from. The book description is a bit misleading since victims of domestic violence aren’t the only ones who get to hide out in Rockton, but everyone must be approved by “The Council” and must pay a hefty fee to go into hiding not only from abusive spouses but, occasionally, from the law. The whole town is hidden from public view by a forest filled with wild animals and even wilder people, so don’t go into the woods alone! And for goodness sakes, don’t let your attention wander or you may miss one of the many twists in this engrossing storyline.

Casey Duncan, a character who has a talent for being in the wrong place at the wrong time as well as having incredibly bad taste in friends, is the heroine and the plot unfolds from her perspective. Thérèse Plummer is compelling as the voice of Casey as she tells her story. Ms. Plummer also does exceptionally well with male voices. Anytime I am listening to a female narrator performing a male character and I forget she isn’t a man, that is very good.

As I said, there is a serial killer which seems to be happening to me a lot lately. You may figure out who it is, but I didn’t. Even though I didn’t figure it out, I wasn’t surprised when the identity was revealed. If people seem too good to be true, they usually are! And . . . like déjà vu all over again, there are severed legs (and arms!) just like in last weeks listen! At this time, there are only two books in the Casey Duncan series, so if you choose to read or listen, you won’t have a lot of catching up to do and you really should start at the beginning. I haven’t read book #2, A Darkness Absolute, but I think the background information about the characters from book #1 will be important to understanding any storyline. So, if you want to find out “Where the Wild Things Are”, pick up a copy of City of the Lost and take a trip to Rockton!

About Kelley Armstrong

Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers’ dismay. All efforts to make her produce “normal” stories failed.

Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She’s the author of the NYT-bestselling “Women of the Otherworld” paranormal suspense series and “Darkest Powers” young adult urban fantasy trilogy, as well as the Nadia Stafford crime series. Armstrong lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids, and far too many pets.
