Nalini Singh’s newest book Silver Silence released on June 13th. This is an extension of her series, but is the new area that includes the  Trinity accord of mutual government.

One of the best futuristic urban fantasy series of all time is the superbly written series Psy Changeling by Nalini Singh. The series is set in the late twenty first century and it takes place on an Earth similar to our own, but instead of one type of humanoid species inhabiting the planet there are three, Psy, Changelings and humans. Come with me as we enter the world Singh has built.

The two dominate species are Psy and Changelings with humans up until recently in the series existing on the fringe of the narrative. To understand the series you have to understand the people who inhabit the books. The Psy are humans who have psychic gifts. Psychic gifts that can lead to great power and glaring deadly psychological problems. To hold onto their psychic gifts and their dominance in the world,  and a hundred years prior to the start of the series, the Psy solved the psychological problem by cutting off their emotional shelves. The state of being cut off from their emotions is called Silence. Silence along with an intergrated cerebral Internet makes the Psy a very ruthless and powerful force. The psychic powers are dangerous and can be deadly. Removing the emotions from an entire race might have stemmed the tide of some not having psychological problems in the community, but to not empathize with others robbed the Psy of their humanity. When the series begins the Psy are of the collective mind set of might makes right. The Psy ideals evolve as the series does, and Singh does a stellar job of showing the readers the consequences of cutting off emotions and the result of killing a people’s humanity. Their sense of family is fractured as children are conceived to benefit the psychic talents of the family not for the benefit of the child. They are conceived outside of sexual congress and are raised Silent immediately.

The Changelings are humanoids that can shift into animals and they are the opposite of the Psy. The Changelings live on pure instinct and emotions and they love fiercely and they too are the apex predators of the earth Singh writes about. They are the opposite reflection of the Psy. They are tied closely to their families and their family of community. In the series there are several competing Changeling groups and how different predators react to each other makes great adventures in the series. The Changelings that Singh writes are not only unique to their world but they are unique to urban fantasy as they can shift at will quickly and even half shift as needed. The Changelings are presented as the perfect blend of animal and human, they are born not made and they are at home in both of their skins. Despite the animal nature of the Changelings they hold their most humanity and love close to their hearts. They have a strong sense of family, of a forever mate, and are highly loyal.

Humans have been on the fringes of the series. Humans do have the population numbers but have no psychic or Changeling super abilities. They are truly mundane and have been preyed upon by the Psy. If the Psy want something they can mentally rape a person to get it. If the Psy and Changeling are the apex predators of the world the humans are their prey. The Changeling respect life therefore they don’t hurt humans, but the Psy see anyone not Psy as lesser than themselves. The humans are portrayed as both good guys and the current evil challenging the status quo of the new Psy/Changeling/(Good)Human accord, even though the Psy have evolved within the series.

The series is not just urban fantasy but each book holds a wonderful romance mostly between Psy and Changelings characters. The series has always had a solid greater world backstory and how all three societies have to work together to make a brighter future.

Singh’s books are available in ebook, paperback and hardcover. The series can be found at retailers all over the world.

About Nalini Singh

I’ve been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There’s no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.

I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated every month).

So far, I’ve worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer’s mill.

I haven’t read any of this series. My favorite series is Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunters.
