I’m about to write a short review about a book I liked very much. Why a short review if I liked the book so much? I find myself in the unique position of being unable to write very much about The Broken Ones without giving spoilers! I was blithely typing along when I suddenly realized that I had written a whole paragraph about one of the many startling twists in the storyline!  So . . . delete, delete and we are back to square one. I almost stopped listening after about 10 minutes. The prologue was bizarre and chilling, but the opening paragraphs of the first chapter didn’t support what I was expecting to be a gripping psychological thriller. Within another 10 minutes, I was utterly captivated by the hapless and abused character Sophie Howland. At that point, I could have listened continuously to the end. If I were writing for a group who had all read the book, I would make what is, to me, a striking comparison to the book I reviewed last week. Even though Anansi Boys is dark humor and The Broken Ones is a psychological thriller, there were some similarities that made me smile.

The Broken Ones is narrated by Alison Larkin, a gifted American-born performer who was adopted and raised by British parents. Although Alison was raised and educated in England, she does a believable American accent. I will also give her kudos for her voice for Sophie’s mother, Maureen. Every time she opened her mouth as this noxious woman, I wanted to slap Mrs. Howland silly.

I am amazed at the number of reviewers who claim to have figured this one out early on. I don’t believe you! ? There are too many others saying they were as blindsided as I was. Yes, I thought I had it figured out, but all I can say is “Wow!” I highly recommend The Broken Ones to my thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies. At just under 7 hours of listening time, you won’t have a huge time investment. Some may find the ending a bit abrupt and under-developed, but I, for one, was satisfied. Not every question was answered for me, but the Shadow knows . . .?
