OK . . . This one is for all you thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies. Ramsey’s Gold written by Russell Blake and narrated by Ray Porter will own you until you finish it. There is a lot to be said about this book, but not a lot can be said in a review without giving spoilers. Just be aware there is danger in the jungle and my main question is why in the world would anyone want to go there??? Not even for Inca treasure would I travel into the heart of this hot and bug-infested place. There are large and unfriendly critters of every description, unfriendly and downright dangerous people, and don’t assume you know everything about your traveling companions. The bad guys are drug traffickers, the good guys (sort of) are CIA, and the worst guys are Russians, or is that the crazy guy who thinks he’s a god? Oh right . . . he’s also a Russian. So, you may ask, are there any really good guys in this convoluted tale? Probably not, but maybe. For the definitive, but still iffy, answer, take a listen to this book which is the opening installment in Russell Blake’s Ramsey’s Gold series. I was beginning to think it was Indiana Jones run amok and without the humor, but lo and behold, there is humor and from a most unlikely source.

Narrator Ray Porter gives an excellent performance of the action-packed story. He has unique voices for all the characters from the devil-may-care Drake Ramsey to the evil Russians.  He effectively captures the madness of the crazy guy who thinks he’s a god as well as the wry humor of the adventurer, Spencer.   A definite plus is the author uses the same narrator in books 2 and 3. Once I get a voice in my head, it’s hard for me to visualize the character with a different performer. Authors take note — choose your narrators well and keep the same one if you’re writing a series. There is no doubt the very talented Mr. Porter is a perfect choice for this series.

After my opening paragraph, you’ll probably think I’m losing it when I say this book has a happy and satisfying ending. Even with a variety of corpses strewn all over the rainforest, I think you will be pleased. You’ll want more from Drake, Allie, and Spencer and the door is left wide open for the continuation of their adventures. Book 2 in the series is Emerald Buddha and Book 3 is The Goddess Legacy, both narrated by Mr. Porter.
