O. M. G…this book! I have been anxiously awaiting this book before I even knew it had a title! I was salivating for Shank’s story while reading Animal, especially when I got to the end. I was so excited when I was fortunate enough to meet Marni Mann at a signing and she confirmed Shank’s story would be told. Author Marni Mann outdid herself, no easy feat. Monster is a mindf*** of epic proportion. And I loved every dark, disturbing word. I’m still talking about it. That’s how I know a book is 5 stars for me. It stays with me. I’ll start another book, but keep thinking about this one. I keep talking about this one.
The way author Marni Mann draws me in, gets my mind spinning, trying to figure out who is who and why they’re doing what they do, is unbelievable. She turns me inside out. I can’t read fast enough to discover if my theories are correct. Her use of flashbacks and the present to build the story, the suspense, is unique and captivating. I hung on every word. I found myself saying, “ohhhh s***” out loud. At times, I had to close the book to take a deep breath before picking right back up because no way was I putting this down until I read every last word.
The characters of Huck, Arin, the Kid, and Shank were so well developed and enigmatic. I loved Huck but feared he might not be who I thought he was. There was more to him than he was letting on. Arin was a refreshing surprise but again, was she who she claimed to be? I wanted them to end up getting a HEA but I wasn’t sure who was good or evil. The mood in the story had me questioning everything. The author played with my mind. When I thought I knew or figured it out, she dropped a veiled clue that would confirm or negate my suspicion, or lead me another way. The more I read, the more my mind teased out the web of characters. Part of me was hoping for Shank’s redemption, while the other part was sure he had no redeeming qualities.
The alternating POV and past/present writing had me entranced. My heart raced the closer I got to the ending. So many questions answered. So many unexpected turns. That ending??? Ahhhmazing! Didn’t see that twist coming, but as is the author’s style, I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. And drop it did! This book is dark, gritty and graphic. My dark readers, you will love it!! I did and I highly recommend it. Looking forward to reading more from author Marni Mann.
