As a child, Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and Trimonite, the hardest material known to man.

When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than Trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating and waiting for suitable prey. Hoop and his associates uncover a nest of Xenomorphs, and hell takes on a new meaning.

Quickly they discover that their only hope lies with the unlikeliest of saviors....

Ellen Ripley, the last human survivor of the salvage ship Nostromo.

If you are a fan of the Alien series or Sci-Fi in general, do yourself a favor and download this Audible Original production of Alien: Out of the Shadows written by Tim Lebbon and directed by Dirk Maggs. I’m not sure how many of you have listened to old radio dramas, but this story is reminiscent of those programs that had entire families gathering around a box with no visual display except for some dials to listen to productions which have taken their places in entertainment history. Although those old dramas were known for the cliff-hangers which kept their fans’ interest until the following week’s episode, Alien: Out of the Shadows qualifies as more of a filler between the first two Alien films. It won’t leave you hanging, but it’s not the end and will leave you satisfied and anticipating where Tim Lebbon will next take you.

As I’m sure you’ve noted, there is quite a cast of voice actors. There isn’t just one person narrating an entire book, but an ensemble of performers each playing the role of his or her own character. Rutger Hauer, Corey Johnson, Matthew Lewis, Kathryn Drysdale, Laurel Lefkow, Andrea Deck, and Mac McDonald are the talented artists who head up the cast and bring Tim Lebbon’s words to life. Some will be well-known to you and all turn in excellent portrayals. Rutger Hauer is really creepy as Ash, the artificial intelligence and Laurel Lefkow has been compared to Sigourney Weaver who plays the role of Ellen Ripley in the original Alien movie. Corey Johnson stars as Chris Hooper, the courageous engineer.

One of the things that sets Alien: Out of the Shadows apart from other audiobooks is the presence of sound effects which greatly enhance the storyline. As in real life, every creak, rattle, and explosion is heard. You’ll hear the moans and groans and howls of the alien creatures as they go about the business of being aliens, and don’t think you’re hearing things if you detect the meow of a cat. At about 4 1/2 hours, it’s a fun way to pass the time if you’re taking a short road trip or just in need of something to liven up a quiet afternoon.
