With unmatched suspense and emotional insight, Harlan Coben explores the big secrets and little lies that can destroy a relationship, a family, and even a town in this powerful new thriller.
Suburban New Jersey Detective Napoleon “Nap” Dumas hasn't been the same since senior year of high school, when his twin brother Leo and Leo’s girlfriend Diana were found dead on the railroad tracks—and Maura, the girl Nap considered the love of his life, broke up with him and disappeared without explanation. For fifteen years, Nap has been searching, both for Maura and for the real reason behind his brother's death. And now, it looks as though he may finally find what he's been looking for.
When Maura's fingerprints turn up in the rental car of a suspected murderer, Nap embarks on a quest for answers that only leads to more questions—about the woman he loved, about the childhood friends he thought he knew, about the abandoned military base near where he grew up, and mostly about Leo and Diana—whose deaths are darker and far more sinister than Nap ever dared imagine.

Don’t ask me why Don’t Let Go is my very first Harlan Coben novel. I have no reason . . . I have no excuse for the fact that I have read nothing by this very fine author. Trite as it may sound, you may rest assured this will not be the last of his books I read. There are many intriguing facets to Don’t Let Go. The narrative is written from the perspective of police officer Napoleon Dumas, a surviving twin, whose brother died either accidentally or by his own hand along with his girlfriend. As Nap lives his life forever changed by his teenaged brother’s mysterious death, he carries on conversations in his head with Leo. It gives the book an intimacy that wouldn’t be found in third person narrative. Also intriguing is Nap’s relationship with his mentor Augie Styles, the father of Leo’s dead girlfriend Diana. I’m not sure if he “mentored” Nap to have a unique sense of justice, but I suspect it. Augie’s soliloquy about the loss of his only child will break your heart. I’m more than intrigued by the character Maura Wells, Nap’s high school girlfriend, who dropped out of sight the night Nap’s brother died and whose disappearance continues to haunt him. The most intriguing thing is what in the world has been going on at the old abandoned Nike Missile base and what, if anything, does it have to do with the recent deaths of a couple of Nap’s high school classmates who were members of the so-called Conspiracy Club? So, have I piqued your interest with all this intrigue? Trust me, there is even more to keep you guessing until you reach the conclusion. Unless you are way smarter than I am, you will find it a shocker! To my delight, this story which is steeped in darkness is also laced with snarky humor. I really like that!
The shining star of Don’t Let Go is narrator Steven Weber who gives an incredible performance. In addition to the mystery and suspense, there is a lot of drama, emotion, and angst in the storyline and Mr. Weber will make you feel the pain of a lost love, a lost child, and a lost sibling with equal degrees of empathy.
What an introduction to Harlan Coben for me! As you might have guessed, I will be adding him to my list of authors to be followed. I’m pleased to say that he has been fairly prolific, so I’m looking forward to happy listening as I make my way through his books and I will definitely be watching for Steven Weber as the narrator. I highly recommend Don’t Let Go to fans of the author or to anyone like me who has never read his work.
