He doesn’t use me, hurt me, or forget about me. He doesn’t treat me like I’m nothing, take me for granted, or make me feel unsafe.
He remembers me, laughs with me, and looks at me. He listens to me, protects me, and sees me. I can feel his eyes on me over the breakfast table, and my heart pumps so hard when I hear him pull in the driveway after work.
I have to stop this. It can’t happen.
My sister once told me there are no good men, and if you find one, he’s probably unavailable.
Only Pike Lawson isn’t the unavailable one.
She’d cook a few meals and clean up a little. It was an easy arrangement.
As the days go by, though, it’s becoming anything but easy. I have to stop my mind from drifting to her and stop holding my breath every time I bump into her in the house. I can’t touch her, and I shouldn’t want to.
The more I find my path crossing hers, though, the more she’s becoming a part of me.
But we’re not free to give into this. She’s nineteen, and I’m thirty-eight.
And her boyfriend’s father.
Unfortunately, they both just moved into my house.

Birthday Girl by Penelope Douglas was the best kept secret. Once author Penelope Douglas announced the surprise book, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it and I was not disappointed. Birthday Girl is a fantastic read. It is a taboo, sexy, hot, anxiety inducing romance. And I loved every word. Author Penelope Douglas can drop a surprise like this anytime!
Jordan is a young, smart, beautiful girl. She is too passive, at first. Too willing to forgive and give second chances, usually at her expense. She is an intriguing character. She has ambition, drive, but can’t get it together due to circumstances beyond her control. It’s these circumstances that lead her to Pike.
Pike is hot, sexy and off limits because, not only is he 19 years older, but, he is also her boyfriend’s father. What starts out as help and admiration, takes a turn to the forbidden. But he is just so perfect, one could understand.
I must admit, I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about this book. It wasn’t the age difference so much as the boyfriend’s father that I wasn’t so sure about. But, author Penelope Douglas did an amazing job telling this story. I had such anxiety while reading, waiting to see when, wondering what was going to happen. How it was going to happen. I also laughed out loud at times, especially with Dutch, Pike’s best friend. He is awesome. Love him.
Author Penelope Douglas develops the story perfectly, slowly building the anticipation and the burn. The attraction is palpable. The banter is witty and filled with innuendo, but, also, sincerity. I like that the characters struggle with their feelings. Both Pike and Jordan discover a great deal about themselves and come full circle in this journey.
Birthday Girl is everything I hoped it would be and more. Fans of Penelope Douglas will not be disappointed. Great story with great characters. Definitely recommend.
