Anna Fox lives aloneā€”a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times . . . and spying on her neighbors.

Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, a mother, their teenage son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldnā€™t, her world begins to crumbleā€”and its shocking secrets are laid bare.

What is real? What is imagined? Who is in danger? Who is in control? In this diabolically gripping thriller, no oneā€”and nothingā€”is what it seems.

As with last week’s audiobook review, I find myself once again looking at a debut novelist and marveling at the caliber of writing talent that is out there. Books like The Woman in the Window by A. J. Finn more than compensate for the ones that are a struggle to finish. Anna Fox’s life is like that train wreck you can’t look away from and her story will hold you in its grip until the startling conclusion. Just when I was congratulating myself on anticipating one of the twists early, I spotted Door #2 .Ā . . and Door #3, so don’t get complacent too early and think you’ve opened all the doors. Anna Fox is one of those characters you really want to judge: she spies on her neighbors, she drinks too much, she lies to her doctor, and she is careless with her medications, but without giving spoilers, I will share that as the story unfolds,Ā we learn this woman is actually doing pretty well under the circumstances. Despite the fact that Anna has made some very bad choices, life has punished her far beyond the level of “I told you so.”

I am extremely impressed with Ann Marie Lee’s narration. The Woman in the Window is a book that goes deep inside a woman’s head and I think listeners will feel every bit of Anna’s grief, fear,Ā and angst in Ms. Lee’s performance. They will also experience the unique form of bondage called agoraphobia as her voice takes them inside Anna’s head.

Now for a few words about theĀ promising author, A. J. Finn. Although this is his first novel, he isn’t what might ordinarily be thought of as an overnight success. As his real self, Daniel Mallory, he grew up in a family that loved mysteries and thrillers and has had a successful career in publishing.Ā While it’s no surprise that he would find success in a genre that is so dear to him, the depth of emotion and the insight into Anna Fox’s character makesĀ The Woman in the Window more than another whodunnit. I highly recommend this book to those who prefer a little more psychological with their thrillers. If you like it, you’ll be glad to know there is a movie to come based on the book .Ā .Ā . quite a coup for Mr. Finn and one that is well-deserved.
