Set in Minnesota, Gone to Dust is the debut private eye murder mystery from Emmy Award-winning Seinfeld writer Matt Goldman.

A brutal crime. The ultimate cover-up. How do you solve a murder with no useable evidence?

Private detective Nils Shapiro is focused on forgetting his ex-wife and keeping warm during another Minneapolis winter when a former colleague, neighboring Edina Police Detective Anders Ellegaard, calls with the impossible.

Suburban divorcee Maggie Somerville was found murdered in her bedroom, her body covered with the dust from hundreds of emptied vacuum cleaner bags, all potential DNA evidence obscured by the calculating killer.

Digging into Maggie’s cell phone records, Nils finds that the most frequently called number belongs to a mysterious young woman whose true identity could shatter the Somerville family--but could she be guilty of murder?

After the FBI demands that Nils drop the case, Nils and Ellegaard are forced to take their investigation underground, where the case grows as murky as the contents of the vacuum cleaner bags. Is this a strange case of domestic violence or something with far reaching, sinister implications?

Continuing an unintended trend, this week’s review features another debut novel. We’ve got more murder and mayhem, more crazy people, and more twists and turns, but the most distinguishing feature of Gone to Dust by Matt Goldman is Matt Goldman himself. If any of you are Seinfeld fans, you may recognize Mr. Goldman’s name as an Emmy Award-winning writer of that show. Seinfeld aficionados won’t be a bit surprised that despite the requisite murder, mayhem, and crazies, Gone to Dust is laced with the same sort of snappy dialogue, unconventional characters, and dry humor that made Seinfeld a cult favorite. Nils Shapiro is not your ordinary private investigator. Hired by the police department of an elite community which has little crime and certainly not murders, “Shap” conducts his investigation into the death of a prominent resident with dogged determination. If you enjoy police procedurals, you will enjoy taking the trip with him as he moves through the list of possible candidates who may have wanted Maggie Somerville dead. I have read and listened to so many thrillers where the perpetrator is finally revealed in a flurry of twists, turns, and drama that I was a bit taken aback when this one just slipped up on me quietly. The motive is a shocker and the killer, even more shocking. Is there any psycho scarier than the one who could sit across the room from you and you would never know it??? Be very afraid of the normal people!

MacLeod Andrews has the perfect tone for our man Nils and for Goldman’s other characters as well. Mr. Andrews unquestionably has the gift of giving listeners a clear mental image of each player in his performance.

If you choose to listen to Gone to Dust — and I hope you do — you’ll be happy to know that not only is it a debut novel, but it is the first in a series. Book #2 has already been written, so if you take a liking to Nils Shapiro, you can continue right on to Broken Ice for more from this promising entry into the fraternity of engaging private eyes.
