#1 New York Times bestselling author Sandra Brown returns with a potent fusion of tantalizing suspense and romance, in a thriller about a reckless pilot caught in a race against time.

Rye Mallett, a fearless “freight dog” pilot charged with flying cargo to far-flung locations, is often rough-spoken, usually unshaven, and he never gets the regulation eight hours of shut-eye before a flight; but he does have a rock-solid reputation: he will fly in the foulest weather, day or night, and deliver the goods safely to their destination. So, when Rye is asked to fly into a completely fogbound Northern Georgia town and deliver a mysterious black box to a Dr. Lambert, he doesn’t ask why–he just ups his price. As Rye’s plane nears the isolated landing strip, more trouble than inclement weather awaits him. He is greeted first by a sabotage attempt that causes him to crash land, and then by Dr. Brynn O’Neal, who claims she was sent for the box in Dr. Lambert’s stead. Despite Rye’s firm “no-involvement” policy when it comes to other people–especially gorgeous women he doesn’t trust–he knows that something about his mysterious cargo just isn’t adding up. Soon Rye and Brynn are in a treacherous 48-hour race to deliver the box before time runs out. With the hours slipping by and everyone from law enforcement officials to hired thugs hot on their heels, the two must protect their valuable cargo from those who would kill for it–that is, if they can trust each other.

It is a stroke of irony that posting my review of Sandra Brown’s latest novel Tailspin coincides with the recent passing of Burt Reynolds who was known and loved for his portrayal of Bo Darville (Bandit) in the movie Smokey and the Bandit. You may all stop shaking your heads now and stop thinking I’ve finally fallen off the cliff because I’m going to tell you what an iconic ’70’s movie has in common with Ms. Brown’s novel. After crashing his plane in a heavy fog, pilot Rye Mallett and Dr. Brynn O’Neal are in a race against time to get an experimental drug to a dying child. Despite their altruistic goal, there is a crooked politician with a posse of psychos who also wants the drug. In Smokey and the Bandit, Bo and Frog (Sally Field) are hauling bootleg beer as opposed to a lifesaving medication, but the police officers who are investigating Rye and Brynn because of the plane crash are just as persistent as Sheriff Buford T. Justice and his son Junior. Although I doubt the author intended Tailspin to be amusing, I had to smile at the way the two cops from the north Georgia town near where the plane crashed kept showing up at every turn like Buford T. and Junior did in the movie! While I was amused by the Georgia cops and their antics, I was not amused by the corrupt U. S. Senator whose thugs would stop at nothing to get the drug for their employer.

This is not my first experience with narrator Victor Slezak. He is an accomplished actor, but, as a native of South Carolina and a real stickler when it comes to authentic Southern accents, I didn’t think Mr. Slezak’s voice for Rye Mallet quite made the cut. On the other hand, he was altogether chilling in his portrayal of the senator’s  psychotic watchdogs.

Sandra Brown is a favorite author of mine and I have yet to be disappointed in one of her books. From my perspective, Tailspin is another in a long line of consistently compelling storylines. The plot has likable characters, good guys and bad guys, romance, a sweet child, and a very twisted conclusion. I think lovers of romantic suspense and Ms. Brown will be highly entertained by this book.
