My astute readers who have studied the graphic have already determined that this month’s best selections have a common theme: lies. To be more specific, the theme is the consequences of lies which run the gamut from a sweetly guarded secret to murder and mayhem. Vying for the title of Liar-in-Chief, we have a mixed bag: a well-loved and loving grandmother, a serial killer, a disturbed teenager and a respected doctor, and rounding out the group, a celebrity impersonator. Don’t assume the serial killer wins the prize; you don’t have to be psychotic to excel at lying! But enough of the teasers and on to my reviews.

Truth and Lies by Caroline Mitchell features my first liar: the serial killer. Lillian Grimes is actually a liar who wants to tell the truth even though it will expose all the other liars who have kept her secrets over the years. This book is the first in a series, so I’m anxious to see where the author is going to take us. There are some very nasty characters in this one and I didn’t find any of them to be particularly truthful, so pick a liar, any liar. 4 Captivating Stars to the author for making me want to continue following DI Amy Winter into Book 2, The Secret Child. 4 Stars to narrator Elizabeth Knowelden for providing chilling interpretations of  all the nasty characters.

The Convoluted Storyline Award goes to White Lies by author Lucy Dawson. If anyone of you is experiencing a midlife crisis involving cougarish (is that even a word?) fantasies, listening to this book will provide the perfect cure! I’m still not sure I know what is the truth and what is a lie in this tale, so I’m settling for every character is telling the truth sometimes and every character is lying most of the time. There are no sympathetic characters and everyone is guilty of something. I confess I love these kinds of books; too much goodness is a bad thing! It was probably unintentional on the author’s part, but the glimpse at Britain’s single-payer healthcare system presented in White Lies is not going to win any fans. 5 Stars to Rachel Atkins who makes each deranged player sound almost normal. Another 5 Stars goes to the author because the mind games are so beautifully written. I’m still guessing!

Liar, Liar is filled with lies of every description, so what could be more perfect than for one of the main characters to be a celebrity impersonator? This is another twisty tale but it lacks the shock factor of White Lies. The lies and deception are shocking to Remmi Storm as she tries to solve the mystery that was her mother Didi’s life and, ultimately, her death, but as I was listening, I found enough clues to anticipate most of the twists. Nevertheless, this is a compelling story that will hold your attention as the author winds her way to the outcome. Brittany Pressley always gives a 5 Star performance and I give 4 Stars to Lisa Jackson whose work is consistently entertaining.

The title says it all about Lies and Other Acts of Love. Kristy Woodson Harvey has written a book that is a total 180 from the other three books I selected and before someone says “A lie is a lie is a lie” you need to read or listen to this sweet story. It will cleanse your palate after all the treachery and destruction characterizing the previous books. Every family has well-kept secrets and Lovey White’s family is no exception. You will love how Lovey and her granddaughter Annabell work things out when one of those secrets threatens to introduce division and chaos into their close-knit group. Everyone needs a bit of feel-good after sinking to the depths of darkness and depravity and this one will do it for you. 4 Stars to the author and to narrator Janet Metzger for briefly keeping the psychos at bay.
