February of 2025 has been a good month for readers and listeners; despite my trepidation about its being the shortest month, and despite the cold and rain (no snow, thank goodness!), I’ve managed to come up with four great listens that I think will help you make it through the chill and the negative forecast by that fearless, furry, weather maven, Punxsutawney Phil! I have for you the second book in a trilogy, the first book in a promising new series performed by a favorite narrator, Book 20 in a favorite older series whose author always injects humor into the mystery/thriller genre, and a milestone – Book 60 of the In Death series.  J.D. Robb, you go girl! I’ve read or listened to every book!

The Mirror

The Lost Bride Trilogy, Book 2

By Nora Roberts

Narrated by Brittany Pressley

The Mirror is Book 2 in Nora Roberts’ Lost Bride Trilogy and, just between you and me, the star of this audiobook is narrator Brittany Pressley. The storyline continues to develop around Sonya MacTavish who has inherited a mansion from her late father’s twin brother – a man she never knew existed until she received her Inheritance (which just happens to be the title of Book 1 in the trilogy.) In The Mirror Sonya is going to take additional trips through the mirror that leads into her family’s grisly past where she will learn more about the people who are responsible for her heritage, many of whom are victims of a murderous curse that has condemned any woman who tries to enter the Poole family as a bride. The highlights of this installment are burgeoning romances for both Sonya and her friend Cleo, our introduction to another lovable pet, a party to end all parties presenting the new owner of the mansion to her neighbors and family, and we get to do fist bumps when Sonya’s scumbag of an ex-fiancé gets exactly what he deserves – no spoilers.  I love the ghosts who haunt this mansion, but all is not romance, adorable pets, and parties because the evil Hester Dobbs still claims the mansion as her own and will not rest until every competitor for her space is dead. I think readers and listeners will find The Mirror a pleasant escape despite the sinister overtones.

Tropic Angel

Archangel Aviation Thrillers, Book 1

By Nate Van Coops

Narrated by Scott Brick

I really love books that feature airplanes even though I don’t particularly like to fly. There are lots of planes in Tropic Angel and people who actually do like to fly. There are also lots of bad guys who may or may not be psychos – another feature I like. I hate to even mention that there is an adorable dog, but there is. Nate Van Coops is a new author for me and, based on this book and a performance by one of my favorite narrators, Scott Brick, the Archangel Aviation Thrillers is a series I’m going to have a good time following. Luke Angel is no angel, but he is a good guy who has distanced himself from his father and his brother who are bad guys. When mysterious bad things begin happening, including the disappearance and apparent suicide of Luke’s best friend, can it be possible the bad guys are back and doing everything they can to destroy the good life Luke has made for himself? To all my readers and listeners, the “Fasten Seatbelt” sign is definitely on for this one! Whether you like to fly or not, I think you’re going to enjoy the ride!

The Big Empty

By Robert Crais

Narrated by Luke Daniels

The Big Empty is Robert Crais’s latest entry in the Elvis Cole and Joe Pike series, and it’s a doozy! It reinforces an opinion that I’m known to express often … there are some really strange people in this world. Even though the villain in The Big Empty is fictional, I don’t doubt the evil spirit we see in Tommy Geller is real and that it is walking around in the heinous crimes we hear about every day. Geller’s daughter Traci is a popular influencer, and she is determined to find out what really happened to the father she adored. Is he alive? Is he dead? Did he willingly abandon his family, or did someone take him from them? Our boys Elvis and Joe are tasked with finding out the truth, but will the evil that inhabits our villain defeat them before they can get answers for Traci. And if they do find answers, will Traci be able to accept them? It’s obvious Luke Daniels has found a niche as narrator for the Elvis and Joe show. His performances are a definite asset to Mr. Crais’s work and the personalities of the characters. This is a series that has been around for a while, but I still love it and the quirky charisma of Elvis and Joe. You’re welcome to join me as I listen!

Bonded in Death

By J.D. Robb

Narrated by Susan Ericksen

It’s no secret that I’m addicted to  J. D. Robb’s In Death series. I love the characters, I love the storyline, but by far my favorites of the books are the ones that give insight into the backgrounds of the family that Detective Eve Dallas has chosen for herself. Bonded in Death is Roarke’s friend and companion Summerset’s story. From the Urban Wars to Summerset’s relationship with the love of his life, Alice, this book isn’t just a mystery to be solved, but is part of the history behind a series that takes place in the future. Summerset didn’t just live through the Urbans. He was part of a group known as “The Twelve” that was prominent in many of the covert activities that characterized that fictional time in history. In life and in death, The Twelve were bonded and promised to always come to each other’s aid if called. Now that promise has placed each surviving member, as well as Darlin’ Eve, in danger at the hands of a traitor to his vow of loyalty. Can Eve and the survivors, along with her team from the NYPSD, take down a killer with no conscience before he avenges his imaginary wrongs? Susan Ericksen is brilliant, and her consistent voices for the cast of this series is one of the primary reasons I have loved it through all 60 books!
