One of my pet peeves is when someone who is already creative and well-known in one field turns around and writes a book that is so damn good, it’s disgusting! Well, friends, Catherine Steadman has done exactly that. Something in the Water is not some pitiable effort to become an author on the coattails of her career as an actress; instead, it’s a book that is entertaining, insightful, well-written and will hold your attention until the last scene plays out. Erin and Mark are what many would consider a golden couple. They are young, attractive, and in love. Each has a successful career —   Erin as a documentary filmmaker and Mark as an investment banker. Their future seems bright; however, when the first line of a book is “Have you ever wondered how long it takes to dig a grave?” you suspect that it’s only a matter of time before the tightly wound ball that is Erin and Mark’s life begins to unwind. You will share in the couple’s anxiety as the author subtly adds layers of tarnish to their golden world: Erin finds the subjects of her documentary aren’t just intriguing, they’re a bit scary, Mark finds himself on rocky ground careerwise, and even the idyllic honeymoon they’ve planned to one of the most exotic places in the world is tainted by the unanticipated need to make a decision no one should ever have to make. As a rule of thumb, I avoid listening to author-narrated books. Even though it would seem the one who wrote the words could interpret them the best, generally speaking, authors read rather than perform. Not so with Catherine Steadman. Her performance of her work is exceptional and brings each character to life for her listeners.

As a debut novel, Something in the Water is that thing that every author hopes for — a winner. There is a message and it is well-delivered. There is a moral dilemma and it is dealt with whether we agree with the resolution or not. There are characters who are not perfect but who are perfectly written. If you do take this one to the beach, be sure to apply your sunscreen liberally; otherwise, you may get so caught up in the story you get burned!
