Darkness is covering the land. As the city of Mezrah grows with power and greed, the rest of the world can only stand by and wait for their inevitable destruction. The only hope against this growing power is an ancient prophecy that people have stopped believing in.

Then a star begins to fall.

Princess Kyla of Taramon stopped believing in the power of light the day her father died. Trapped in a city she does not care for, under the watchful glare of her mother, the queen, she struggles to accept her fate.

Then a star begins to fall.

Jethro has loved Kyla for as long as he can remember. Learning that she was to marry his cousin drove a wedge between him and the feisty princess. Watching her from a distance is a torture he is unable to free himself from.

Then a star begins to fall, sparking an ember of hope and sending two seekers on a treacherous journey into the unknown.

The prophecy has failed. As Athra lies in the dungeons of Taramon with his defeated army, this is all he can believe. His city has been torn apart. He has failed his people and all that awaits him is an agonising death.

But the light has been found.

Ashan and his dark army proceed in gloating triumph. Safeer heads to Mezrah with Taramon’s women and children, while the rest of his men remain in the northern city, forcing their prisoners to tear it down stone by stone.

But two sparks have been ignited.

Kyla and Jethro learn of Taramon’s demise and, with the children, formulate a plan to rescue their people and bring an end to the overpowering darkness. It will take all their strength and every ounce of faith they possess…

Favourite Quotes From The Elements Trilogy

Unknown

It was once said that a light could shine in the darkness and the darkness could not overcome it, but then the light died and a darkness born of doubt and fear began to fester throughout the land, breeding an evil that no one invited.

This is the first line in the book and I really like it. It feels almost poetic and I can imagine a rich voice narrating the first few lines of the book, giving a brief history to the world before the action begins.

*****

I believe that if men would band together, care for one another and work as one, then the darkness could not touch us.

Athra says this line and I think it epitomises the kind of man he is and the kind of King he wants to be. He is very compassionate and believes in the goodness of mankind. I really like that about him.

*****

Jethro looked over at his father and sighed.

“How can I go without her?” He rubbed the back of his neck and began to pace. “The prophecy clearly says two seekers. I don’t want to go alone.”

“Then maybe you shouldn’t.”

Jethro turned to his father with a grin. “Are you suggesting I defy my queen?”

“I’m suggesting you consider who is the higher power?”

The relationship between Jethro and his father is a solid one. They have a deep mutual respect and love for each other. I like the way they can talk so openly and I love Benyamin’s faith in the God of Light.

*****

Safeer puffed his chest out. “Your time is drawing near, my king. The seekers will fail and this prophecy will be proven false. I have already sent trackers to follow them.”

A cruel smile slowly crept across the king’s face.

“Follow? Don’t you mean destroy?”

Safeer and King Ashan are really evil characters and I had so much fun writing them. It’s quite freeing to be able to make characters say and do the nastiest things…things you would never, ever consider doing yourself.

*****

“Perfection is a myth, Kyla. Even the most beautiful blossoms can have flaws, but that doesn’t make them any less breathtaking.”

Jethro says this line. I can hear it in my head, the way his deep voice rounds over the words. I love it because I know he’s talking about her when he says it, though he’d never let on. His love for Kyla is so deep and passionate. It’s one of the things I love most about him.

*****

“Your mother is going to chop my head off and hang it above the city gates as a warning to all men.”

Another Jethro line that makes me smile everytime I read it. Once again Princess Kyla’s got up to her usual antics and Jethro fears the Queen’s response. As children he always got in trouble for getting Kyla into trouble. He’s always felt a certain responsibility for Kyla. They were best friends as children and even now, he’d do anything to keep her safe.

Unseen

“May the light rise again,” Benyamin murmured.

This is a common quote throughout the entire series. It encapsulates everything the seekers are trying to do. It is a brief line of hope that can comfort a despairing soul.

*****

“Why did you really kiss me?” Sleep was upon her; the words were merely murmured in a precursor to slumber.

“Because I love you, Kyla. I always have.”

She wasn’t even sure the words were real. Her mind was already floating on a dream. A soft smile touched her lips before the blackness took her.

This is the moment I was bursting to write from the outset – the moment that Jethro FINALLY admits his love for Kyla. I just love it.

*****

“There is a mystery within the unseen. You do not know what your future holds. All you have to do is trust that the best waits for you. The desires of your heart will one day come true.”

This is a quote from Mya. She is a fountain of wisdom throughout these books and I love her dearly. The thing I like about this quote is that I really do believe it.

*****

“He’s supposed to be this mighty God of Light. He’s supposed to protect us, but all he’s ever done is pillaged my life! I hate your god.” Kyla pointed at the children. “I hate him.”

I know this is an unusual quote to choose, but I like it. It’s so honest and raw. Kyla is on a quest for a God she doesn’t even believe in and she can’t contain her doubts anymore. All her anger and hurt from years passed finally bubbles to the surface.

*****

“Tell me your dream. What does it look like?” Kyla gazed at him.

Jethro’s quick, strong hands pulled her onto his lap. He tucked her up against him, so they were face to face. His thumb ran from her chin to beneath her earlobe, his fingers threading into the hair at the nape of her neck. His lips danced down to her collarbone and back up again, sending hot tingles racing through every fibre of her body.

“It looks like this,” he whispered, “except there is no war and no guilt. Just you, me and an unexplored horizon.”

This scene warms my heart everytime. It’s so bittersweet. These lovers have no future together, they know this…but nothing can stop them from dreaming about what it would be like.

Unleashed

“The light does not take away our fear, it helps us rise above it.”

I like that the light does not make the characters invincible…it gives them strength, helps them to overcome things, but the characters must still use every ounce of courage and bravery they possess. It is Kyla’s journey from doubt to faith throughout this story that touches me the most.

*****

“Nothing is hopeless, my love. The sun rises each morning, filling the earth with light. Darkness cannot endure. We must trust the prophecy.”

Another quote about faith, spoken by Jethro’s mother. She is trying to comfort her terrified daughter. I love the whole idea of the darkness not being able to beat the light. It was a very fun concept to play with.

*****

Jethro’s eyes warmed with a soft smile. “It’s the last kiss I’ll ever give you. I wanted it to be a good one.”

Kyla grabbed his wrists, willing him to stay where he was. His battle to move was there for all to see. Slowly his hands dropped away and the loss made her heart buckle. She placed her hands on his cheeks before he could move.

“No matter what happens, I will always, always love you.” Her voice caught and instant tears filled her eyes.

I’m such a sucker for soft, romantic moments. This one totally made me cry when I wrote it.

*****

“You can think what you like. But these are good people and if you want them to work for you, you’ll treat them with respect.”

Athra says this line when he is standing up to one of Mezrah’s guards who is beating a man from Taramon. Athra is such a good man. I love the way he views people. His compassionate heart and total respect for mankind is his greatest strength.

*****

“Don’t be so sure you know everything, Lord Safeer. Darkness may have had a small triumph, but you know what the light is capable of. If Oron has been unleashed, you are a dead man.”

Bordor says this line to Safeer. I like it because Safeer is so arrogant and I like the way the formidable, dangerous Bordor still respects the power of the light.
