~Karen’s Review~

Redheaded Stepchild by Jaye Wells wasn’t a bad paranormal adventure, but it was also not a book that grabbed me.  There was nothing unique in the world that Wells built in this first book in her Sabina Kane series.  The main character in the book is Sabina Kane, a vampire assassin and the granddaughter of one of the leaders of the vampire race.  Despite her granny being uber powerful because of her mixed race Sabina is relegated to the roll of killer for the race.   Even vampires are prejudice against mixed race people.  So we have a powerful vampire assassin who has always done what she is told.  She is a cold blooded killer, that has people quaking in their books; and she even kills her friend on the  orders of the ‘powers that be’ in the first chapter.  I sampled the book, after reading the first chapters where she kills her best friend a fellow assassin, I proceeded to purchase the book.  Well, what started out as a book that interested me, tumbled into a maze of ‘what the hell’.  Sabina is supposed to be an assassin and the baddies, get the drop on her all the time. Excuse me how did she survive assassin school.  She even has a stalker in a mage name Adam Lazarus.  How do you not sense a tail, if you are a great assassin?  The girl bumbles along throughout the book and the plot bumbles along with her.  I honestly don’t know how she survived in the magical world, because this assassin is clueless.  Maybe her occupations is really sassin, cause she does weld a lot of sass. The author throws way to much gerrymandering nonsense into the plot, forbidden love, tragic deaths, orphaned child, supernatural war and yes the potential for a love interest in her stalker.  Oh I almost forgot a demon side kick the guise of a hairless cat that tried to kill her and a reformed porn fairy.  I was exhausted trying to keep up with this bumbling crew.
