I have some major issues with Dragon Fall by Katie MacAlister, even though the book is paranormal romance it is too unrealistic. Let me explain in McAlaster’s world the heroine a mid thirty year old female with no history of mental illness that the reader is made aware of, witnesses a strange event and weirder murder, and is carted off the the looney bin with both of her sibling’s blessing. What. The. Hell. The book has the character of Aoifee as a no nonsense gal who is only at the GothFaire for entertainment, not that she even remotely believes in the magic that the faire purports to demonstrate. The plot doesn’t establish what Aoifee does for a little living or really anything about her life prior to the GothFaire. After the first few chapters this book looked like a do not finish one, and I never don’t finish a book so I trudged onward. As I just finished stating McAliaster with her plot set up lost me from the very start of the story, but then a black dog and a man named Kostya enter the story; and I became engaged in the plot. The story held my interest with the hilarious internal dialogue the Aoifee has with herself. But, the inner dialogue just got annoying and so did Aoifee endless saying, that were at first funny; but just became too freaking much. Let’s not even going into the potty humor of taking a talking dog to do his business. I felt as if I was reading a book filled with humor written by a adolescent, surrounded by a plot that could have stood on it’s own as an urban fantasy story.
This book is definitely a pass especially because of the abrupt ending and thinking book two would be a continuation of the story and finding out it isn’t is just another nail in the series coffin. I do enjoy paranormal romance/urban fantasy that have humor instilled in them.
Note this book builds on MacAlister’s world building in her previous literary catalog, with other publishers. I assume if you enjoyed her previous novels you will enjoy this book also. I unfortunately did not.
