~ Maria’s Review ~

I have been a fan of JR Ward’s writing since I picked up my first novel of The Black Dagger Brotherhood. She’s had me hooked since page one, true. Yes, I did that! And with every book author JR Ward writes in this series, she keeps it fresh, engaging, frustrating, steamy and addicting!! That’s no small feat. The Beast is book 14 and it doesn’t get old. The characters continue to develop, surprising themselves with self-discovery, all the while remaining true to who they are and making no apologies for it.

Although each novel usually focuses on a brother and his journey, they are not standalones in my opinion. Author JR Ward includes so much and there is carry over within each book. I’m sure they could be read out of order, but, in my opinion, the reader would miss out on that which is the brotherhood and there’d be spoilers or things the reader wouldn’t understand because of the continuing storylines of the battle with the Lessening Society and the secondary characters. There is just so much happening in her books to fully appreciate it, they should be read in order. I love being in their world.

The Beast centers around Rhage and his mate, Mary. Rhage continues to make me laugh, swoon, and wish vampires were real. This is the story after the HEA. It focuses on their relationship now that they are mated. The struggles and problems couples face in everyday life, amplified because Rhage is a warrior of The Black Dagger Brotherhood, a fighter and defender of the King, as well as fiercely loyal friend, brother and husband. Something isn’t right with him. As a fan, I predicted what I believed was the issue and loved watching it unfold. It was like I knew before he did. When he put it together, it was achingly beautiful. The relationships between the characters provide for comical banter, emotional angst, sexy chemistry, and there is drama, action and unexpected turn of events.

JR Ward has a way of weaving and intermingling her secondary plotlines in such a fluid way that it flows smoothly. It does not feel choppy or give the reader whiplash. There are some twists I did not see coming that had me like “Oh shit” and shaking my head with OMG and WTF!

This is an original, creative continuing, amazing, fantastically written paranormal romance series. Not every book is 5 stars and I do have my favorites. Rhage is one of them. This series is a 5 star series overall.

About J.R. Ward

J.R. Ward is the number one New York Times bestselling author of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series of vampire books. She is a winner of the prestigious Romance Writers of America RITA award for Best Paranormal Romance and is a multiple RITA nominee. A graduate of Smith College, she was a double major in History and Art History with a medieval concentration in both and she still longs at times for a return to those days sitting in dark lecture halls, looking at slides of old triptychs and reliquaries. Prior to becoming a full-time writer, she was a corporate attorney, serving for many years as the Chief of Staff of one of Harvard Medical Schools premier teaching sites. Her idea of absolute heaven is a day filled with nothing but her computer, her dog and her coffee pot and the Brothers, of course.
