Boston Detective D.D. Warren faces her most brutal adversaries yet—a class of jaded thriller writers—in New York Times Bestselling Author Lisa Gardner’s exclusive e-Book short story

In Lisa Gardner's second short story, after the New York Times bestseller The 7th Month, Detective D.D. Warren takes on her most intimidating assignment yet: a fifty-minute class meant to educate a horde of bloodthirsty thriller writers on the ways of actual police work. Yet sometimes life really does imitate fiction, as D.D. takes the writers through the reality of one of her most twisted cases—a case that involves a seedy motel room, drugs, prostitution . . . and a severed leg.

With Gardner’s trademark suspense, sharp observations, and thrilling storytelling, Three Truths and a Lie is a fascinating chapter in D.D.’s storied career.

My decision to review 3 Truths and a Lie by Lisa Gardner was something of an experiment. Not because Ms. Gardner is a new author for me and not because I was concerned about the quality of the storyline. I’m very familiar with the Detective D. D. Warren series, so I was anticipating a good story. The reason I consider it an experiment is because it is a very short listen: it’s not a short book or a novella, but a short story. Just about an hour in length and I was totally captivated for that period of time. Detective D. D. Warren has been invited to lecture a group of authors who write thrillers about police procedure and she turns it into a bit of a game when she tells her students her lecture is based on a true case with the exception of one detail and it is a lie. There will be a prize at the end of the lecture for whoever can guess which detail is the lie. The case itself is fascinating, a bit tongue-in-cheek and I will leave you to find out the details if you chose to listen. I will tell you a severed leg figures prominently in the narrative, a fact which both the lecture attendees and I find intriguing!

Narrator Kirsten Potter is awesome! She is the perfect voice for Detective D. D. Warren . . . authoritative, no-nonsense, and all cop. As an added bonus and a bit of a teaser, Ms. Potter reads the first couple of chapters in the next full-length novel in the series, Find Her.

There aren’t a lot of characters in this story. There is a brief mention of D. D.’s husband Alex Wilson and their toddler at the beginning, but the others are those around whom the case revolves and the attendees at the lecture. Don’t be surprised when the author includes some names you may recognize as real-life thriller writers. So, if you have an hour or so to listen and want something that is entertaining without getting yourself involved in a lengthy storyline, this will be just right. By the way, don’t even try to guess which detail in Detective Warren’s case is the lie! ?? ?
