Author Lylah James is new to me. The Mafia and His Angel caught my attention. I’m glad it did. Creative, unique spin on a mafia romance. I didn’t think I’d fall for the Russian mob prince, after all, I’m Italian. LOL But, author Lylah James made it crystal clear how evil the Italian crew was. She also made Alessio impossible to resist. Like Ayla, our heroine, I found myself drawn to him. I love a dangerous man, what can I say? However, Alessio is more than dangerous. He’s deadly, vengeful, dark and seductive. He can charm you while killing you and have you thank him with his last breath. There is more to him than the gruff exterior and Ayla begins to bring things out in him that he forgot he possessed. Ayla is so broken. She’s beautiful and running. She’s deathly afraid and may have gone from the frying pan into the fire. Yet, she also is finally able to feel some peace and safety. Maybe he isn’t her enemy but her savior.
The storyline is so intriguing. I was captivated. It is like to storylines in one. The author does a fantastic job weaving them together, each enhancing the other. It is a story about revenge, betrayal, love and loathing. It is self-discovery for both our hero and heroine. There are many twists and turns, obstacles that must be carefully navigated. Then, there’s waiting for the shoe to drop and the truth to be discovered. The fallout to be sorted. It isn’t going to be pretty.
The relationship between Alessio and Ayla is well developed. There is insta-lust but not insta-love. I like that she has Ayla tread warily. It makes the character believable and likable. It also rings truer for a man like Alessio to feel lust but not love quickly. My heart raced with every page, waiting for the secret to come out.
The story is told in alternating POV, which is my favorite because it lets me know both my characters’ thoughts and feelings. It also lets me be privy to information the other character doesn’t know yet. I like being in the know. The push/pull is fantastic. The chemistry is off the charts. Her seeming innocence is endearing and I love his reactions to her.
This story is raw, gritty and not pretty. There is some graphic violence depicted, which is to be expected in a mafia story. But it is also hopeful, with sweetness and romance. It is really good. It is a cliffhanger. Part 2 should be releasing soon and I cannot wait.

tried to focus on the intruder but he was effortlessly hidden in the darkness.
body, hiding my nakedness from his eyes. Shaking from head to toe, I swallowed
hard and my stomach started to cramp in fear— maybe in anticipation too.
adjust my eyes.
comfortably. His left ankle was crossed on top of his right knee and there was
a small remote in his hand, which he probably used to turn on the lights.
on and a black linen shirt, which was unbuttoned at the top, to reveal some of
his chest.
chest. I forced away the thought.
my body. There was no embarrassment. No awkwardness. Alessio was completely
calm and confident as his eyes raked over my body.

show fear. Men like him fed on fear. They used it to their advantage.
and dry. When I started to feel lightheaded, I realized I’d been holding my
breath for too long.
breath again. But, it was pointless.
speechless and frozen where I stood. When my body started to warm up under his
focus, I closed my eyes tightly. But the tingling didn’t stop.
