When Casey Duncan first arrived at Rockton, the off-the-grid, isolated community built as a haven for people running from their pasts, she had no idea what to expect. There are no cell phones, no internet, no mail, and no way of getting in or out without the town council's approval. She certainly didn't expect to become the town homicide detective. But, the very last thing she expected was for the council to drop a dangerous criminal into their midst without a plan to keep him imprisoned. And she never thought that she'd have to be responsible for him.

The longer Oliver Brady stays in town, the more people seem to die around him. When evidence begins piling up that someone inside Rockton is working as his accomplice, Casey races to figure out who exactly Brady is and what crimes he's truly responsible for committing.

There is an old saying “Everyone is guilty of something.” The meaning is clear – there are no truly innocent people and Kelley Armstrong’s latest visit to the city of Rockton, a safe haven for those who are not exactly innocent but not entirely guilty, pushes that meaning to its limits. When a “narcissistic, sociopathic, sadist” comes to town, it seems anybody can buy their way in if they have enough money. Where exactly is Rockton? I think this description by Lover Karen says it best: “If you haven’t visited fictional Rockton, here is a simple 411— it’s a town where people go to voluntarily disappear from their problems. Poof! New life in the rugged Canadian wilderness. Do a little creative financing at work? Poof! Pay to get into Rockton until the heat is off. Stalker won’t leave you alone? Rockton is your sanctuary. In Rockton, new names and backstories are given to everyone.  But, not everyone is a white collar criminal or an innocent hiding out. Some are deadly and dangerous and the residents don’t know who is really who because people lie.” Last week I referred to my partiality to psychos and as I am strolling around Rockton I am sure to encounter at least one of those. In This Fallen Prey, the resident psychos are visited by psychos from the outside world who coincidentally happen to be killers. It is up to Detective Casey Butler and Sheriff Eric Dalton to figure out not only how to incarcerate a killer but to decide who the real killer is.

Thérèse Plummer has quickly become the voice of the Rockton Series and she gives a stellar performance of all the players in the town’s drama.

I am going to confess there was a point in the story when I almost despaired that the author could come up with an ending that would make it up to me for having to wade through the animal and human carnage and our strong girl detective having a melt-down. Nevertheless, I persevered through all the grisly twists and turns, unseen curveballs, and things dropping out of trees that make the “did that just happen?” conclusion exactly right. There are still unanswered questions, but they are merely open doors through which we’ll walk into the next book. Bravo Ms. Armstrong!

About Kelley Armstrong

Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers’ dismay. All efforts to make her produce “normal” stories failed.

Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She’s the author of the NYT-bestselling “Women of the Otherworld” paranormal suspense series and “Darkest Powers” young adult urban fantasy trilogy, as well as the Nadia Stafford crime series. Armstrong lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids, and far too many pets.
