Souls in Ruin by Jacqueline White

Read all the trigger warnings before you enter this tale. The writing is five stars, but the content is extremely dark, pitch black dark. Some reviewers have pointed out that it eroticized torture. Yes both sex and torture are elements in the book, but it’s the survival that I read.

I in all honestly don’t know how to rate this book, as I was trapped in a dungeon with Mireille for most of the book and I’m not very happy about that. Unfortunately for me the author does a brilliant job of trapping me there with her writing style, making every single rivulet of blood felt. If you as a reader like extremely dark fantasy with morally pitch black men, then this book is right up your alley. Mireille throughout this book is subjected to horrendous torture. First by the court and family of her Kingdom, as she is the Kings illegitimate daughter, and is emotionally stunted in her interactions because of how she was treated. Then she is subjected to degradation and violence as a captive of a conquering king. Everyone knows more about what’s going on than Mireille and because of her naivety of her lot in life she is at the tender mercies of vile people. The vilest is her father, as he is to blame for most everything that happens to Mireille. Mireille does have to shining lights in her life her bestie and her baby sister. These are the only two who get beyond Mireille’s protective walls.
There are two MMC and no this is no love triangle as there is no love involved, only revenge and manipulation. As I mentioned earlier, the MMCs are pitch black, and I am curious to see where the author goes with their stories, as they both have reasons for being the dark souls that their experiences have made of them.
Did I like this book, not really as being trapped in a dark cell for 3/4 of the book was depressing. Plus there is a lot torture, and it’s not light. Will I be reading the second book, YES! As the writer pulled me into her web and I need to see where the story goes!
