Demons from the past are threatening to destroy the passionate bond they’ve forged despite their vow that nothing will ever keep them apart. A truly devastating loss coupled with the promise of a new hope opens their eyes to what is most important, but is it possible for the lovers to move on from the painful histories that continue to haunt them? A stalker is still lurking in the shadows, plotting evil amidst the distraction of the 2012 Olympic games in London. Brynne and Ethan are on the cusp of losing everything as the stakes rise. Eyes Wide Open is a passion-wrought story that shows us what pure love can achieve when tested and what the heart can accomplish despite danger and adversity.

Review

I truly enjoyed Eyes Wide Open (Blackstone Affair #3) by Raine Miller, but I do suggest if you are a new reader to this series, start with Miller’s two historical books first His Perfect Passion and The Libertine, even if you aren’t a historical fiction reader. The reason for this suggestion being that the two books I mentioned will give you a richer texture for the backdrop of the romance of Ethan and Brynne, as elements of the two Miller historical romances are also in the Blackstone series.

Eyes Wide Open starts off right where the events of All In (Blackstone Affair #2) left off. You have Brynne and Ethan in Somerset England at his sister Hannah’s family’s house. I was thrilled that Miller depicted a lighter side to the intense Ethan; it provided another layer to his already faceted personality. In Eyes Wide Open the book is written from both Ethan’s and Brynne’s points of view, which I appreciated–loved getting into the minds of both characters.

The sexual exploits in the book are hot, heavy, and frequent, but it must be understood that this is how these two characters communicate with one another. Brynne is still struggling with saying the words “I love you,” and Ethan can say it, but in his mind there are parts of himself he doesn’t think anyone could love. So sex is not about the carnality of the act but about these two characters connecting on an emotional and soulful level. You know the old adage “Actions speak louder than words?” Well in this book, the action would be sex and the words are abiding love.

Does this book tie everything up in a neat, pretty package? No, it doesn’t because life for these two characters has never been neat and tidy, so why should a story about them not be true to the characters? They both have challenges in the book, but they face them eyes wide open, warts and all, and make the best life that they can. Totally loving someone means that they have enormous power over you, and Brynne struggles with control issues, whereas Ethan needs total control to feel safe and secure in his own world.
If you haven’t bought Eyes Wide Open, then you need to definitely buy and read this book.
