From debut author Caroline Kepnes comes You, one of Suspense Magazine’s Best Books of 2014, and a brilliant and terrifying novel for the social media age.
When a beautiful, aspiring writer strides into the East Village bookstore where Joe Goldberg works, he does what anyone would do: he Googles the name on her credit card.
There is only one Guinevere Beck in New York City. She has a public Facebook account and Tweets incessantly, telling Joe everything he needs to know: she is simply Beck to her friends, she went to Brown University, she lives on Bank Street, and she’ll be at a bar in Brooklyn tonight—the perfect place for a “chance” meeting.
As Joe invisibly and obsessively takes control of Beck’s life, he orchestrates a series of events to ensure Beck finds herself in his waiting arms. Moving from stalker to boyfriend, Joe transforms himself into Beck’s perfect man, all while quietly removing the obstacles that stand in their way—even if it means murder.
A terrifying exploration of how vulnerable we all are to stalking and manipulation, debut author Caroline Kepnes delivers a razor-sharp novel for our hyper-connected digital age. You is a compulsively readable page-turner that’s being compared to Gone Girl, American Psycho, and Stephen King’s Misery.

audiobook1This week’s review will just serve as an update to an earlier review I did of the digital version of Caroline Kepnes’ book, You.  Because I loved the book so much, I decided to take a listen to the audio version.  To be perfectly honest, I had real misgivings about listening to this book. I simply couldn’t conceive of putting myself inside the head of our favorite sociopath, Joe Goldberg. For about the first five minutes, my misgivings continued and then. . . suddenly I realized that narrator Santino Fontana had become the voice of Joe in my head and I loved it! I was laughing, smirking, and shaking my head as I accompanied Joe on his adventures and misadventures. Because the POV is second person, it’s not like hearing someone tell a story as with most audiobooks, it’s more like being inside someone’s head; in fact, it’s exactly like that!  You go from being an observer of a life to actually living the life. Doesn’t it make y’all squirm just a tiny bit to imagine knowing every single little thought in someone’s mind?

I can’t say enough about the narrator! He definitely confirms my view that actors make the best narrators. What a coup for Caroline Kepnes to have this very talented artist read her first book! And what’s even more exciting, Mr. Fontana will also be narrating the audiobook of  Hidden Bodies, the sequel to You which releases February 23. If you have a few moments, click on the links I’ve provided and introduce yourself to Santino Fontana. . .it will be well worth your time.

Look for my review of Hidden Bodies which will be posted on January 23, a month in advance of the book and audiobook publication.  Are you surprised I already have the audiobook preordered? Rest assured on February 23, I will be back in the head of Joe Goldberg! But wait! Will I be in his head or will he be in mine? Smiley
