Flora Dane is a victim.
Seven years ago, carefree college student Flora was kidnapped while on spring break. For 472 days, Flora learned just how much one person can endure.
Flora Dane is a survivor.
Miraculously alive after her ordeal, Flora has spent the past five years reacquainting herself with the rhythms of normal life, working with her FBI victim advocate, Samuel Keynes. She has a mother who’s never stopped loving her, a brother who is scared of the person she’s become, and a bedroom wall covered with photos of other girls who’ve never made it home.
Flora Dane is reckless.
. . . or is she? When Boston detective D. D. Warren is called to the scene of a crime—a dead man and the bound, naked woman who killed him—she learns that Flora has tangled with three other suspects since her return to society. Is Flora a victim or a vigilante? And with her firsthand knowledge of criminal behavior, could she hold the key to rescuing a missing college student whose abduction has rocked Boston? When Flora herself disappears, D.D. realizes a far more sinister predator is out there. One who’s determined that this time, Flora Dane will never escape. And now it is all up to D. D. Warren to find her.

Are you afraid of the dark? If so, you might want to give Find Her a wide berth. In her 8th novel in the Detective D. D. Warren series, author Lisa Gardner has created a darkness so palpable, you may never be able to enter anther dark room. There are dark characters, there is dark emotion, and there is sensory darkness like none I’ve ever experienced in a book. Occasionally I read a book where the author has created a world that I find so completely alien, I can’t begin to imagine it is real. Yet, even in my naïveté, I know these worlds exist. Keep that statement in mind and add the voice of Kirsten Potter reading to you from the dark side and you will probably never leave home alone again. There are some truly evil characters in this book. Flora Dane’s abductor Jacob Ness and his daughter are as depraved as any I’ve ever encountered. We get a chilling picture of them through Flora’s eyes as she tells her story in first person POV. Detective D. D. Warren works the case in third person POV. Not unlike Flora, Detective Warren has her own issues to work through as she struggles to overcome a physical injury as well as her inability to relinquish any control to her squad mates.

I am truly at a loss for the words to describe Kirsten Potter’s performance. She is the evil Jacob and his even more evil daughter. She is D. D. Warren at her most vulnerable. She is Flora Dane in an emotional portrayal that will likely bring you to tears as you hear Flora describe her fear, her pain, her terror, and her will to survive.

Find Her is a psychological thriller in every sense of the word. As Jacob toys with Flora, Lisa Gardner creates one diabolical mind game after another. Even after her rescue, Flora’s abductor continues to have an unnatural hold on her. As you read or listen, you will be wasting your time trying to outthink the author. You will be better served to just pay attention to details and watch for curves in the road. One final observation . . . if any of you are college students and you choose to read Find Her, you may decide to skip Spring Break this year!?
