Jack Reacher.

The ultimate loner.

An elite ex-military cop who left the service years ago, he's moved from place to place...without family...without possessions...without commitments.

And without fear. Which is good, because trouble - big, violent, complicated trouble - finds Reacher wherever he goes. And when trouble finds him, Reacher does not quit, not once...not ever.

But some unfinished business has now found Reacher. And Reacher is a man who hates unfinished business.

Ten years ago, a key investigation went sour and someone got away with murder. Now a chance encounter brings it all back. Now Reacher sees his one last shot. Some would call it vengeance. Some would call it redemption. Reacher would call it...justice.

I have to warn you in advance, between this week’s review and next week’s review, the body count is going to get very high, so if you are the least bit squeamish, Lee Child’s Persuader, the 7th book in his Jack Reacher series, may not be for you. On the other hand, if you love Reacher and you love Dick Hill, the voice of Jack Reacher, you will do a fist bump every time one of the bad guys goes down. One of my favorite things about Jack Reacher as a character is his ability to live his life without the usual “stuff” that the rest of us find so important. The clothes on his back, maybe a little money and/or a firearm and it’s all good with this man who frequently says nothing. This ability figures prominently in each of the Reacher stories and Persuader is no exception. Only a man with nothing to lose except his life can work a storyline like Jack Reacher. As the story begins, our favorite antihero is helping a government agency with an elaborate ruse to bring down a smuggler. There is also a missing government agent who needs to be retrieved from the bad guys. But Reacher has his own motive for participating when he finds himself looking at the face of a man he thought was long dead and the revenge he thought he had exacted becomes void.

I can’t even imagine listening to a Reacher book that isn’t narrated by Dick Hill. It isn’t only his voice for Reacher, but the way he narrates the action and the dialogue. Persuader is fast-paced and riveting and Mr. Hill’s performance is one of his best.

I think one of my favorite qualities about Persuader is the way the author gives us a story within a story. With this literary device, he provides plausibility for the emotion that drives a seemingly unemotional man with the intense desire to deliver payback to a man who should have been food for the fishes. If you are new to the series, there is no particular order and each book can be read or listened to as a standalone. This book is classic Reacher so if you’re a fan of the series, you won’t be disappointed. A unique twist is how the book got its title, so look for it! ?
