Robbie’s Random Thoughts

It has been quite some time since I posted a version of Random Thoughts. Cyber Week is still going hot and heavy, so I am posting my thoughts about the Harry Potter series as a whole because the audiobooks would make a great gift for someone on your list who loves the books or the movies. Here are a few random thoughts . . .
  1. Am I the last person on this earth to finish reading the Harry Potter series?
  2. I’ve read many angst-filled books, but elf angst? And, yes, I cried!!! I have to put J.K. Rowling right up there with George R.R. Martin for killing off beloved characters.
  3. The most unrelatable characters can be made sympathetic and the bad guys are sometimes bad for a good reason. No matter whether you’re a Witch, a Wizard, or a Muggle, there is hatred and bigotry everywhere. In the end, love conquers darkness and evil.
  4. The artwork in my home is very dull compared to the paintings at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!
  5. Narrator Jim Dale — I bet you’re fun at parties! Favorite voice . . . Dolores Umbridge. She was the true villain in the story. Mr. Dale adds a whole new dimension to J.K. Rowling’s work.
  6. Did I just imagine it or was every character from every book mentioned in Deathly Hallows? Am I the only one who thought Deathly Hallows had a bit more of an adult tone than the other books?
  7. Magic is not all it’s cracked up to be. Even the most well-cast spell can go awry!
  8. Just because witches and wizards probably don’t exist doesn’t mean Harry Potter’s story isn’t filled with humor, life lessons, and profound observations. Even poltergeists are entitled to opinions!
  9. Dear Ms. Rowling . . . you made me smile and even giggle like Dolores with some of the names for your characters. What a creative mind!
  10. Beware of dark passageways and forgotten passwords. If you’re sneaking around at night, watch for Peeves, Nearly Headless Nick, Mrs. Norris, and, of course, Nagini!

About J.K. Rowling

Joanne Rowling, best known as J.K. Rowling, was born on July 31, 1965, in Yate, England. She adopted her pen name, J.K., incorporating her grandmother’s name, Kathleen, for the latter initial (Rowling does not have a middle name). A graduate of Exeter University, Rowling moved to Portugal in 1990 to teach English. There, she met and married the Portuguese journalist Jorge Arantes. The couple’s daughter, Jessica, was born in 1993. After her marriage ended in divorce, Rowling moved to Edinburgh with Jessica to live near her younger sister, Di. While struggling to support her daughter and herself on welfare, Rowling worked on a book, the idea for which had reportedly occurred to her while she was traveling on a train from Manchester to London in 1990. After a number of rejections, she finally sold the book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (the word “Philosopher” was changed to “Sorcerer” for its publication in America), for the equivalent of about $4,000. The book and its subsequent series chronicled the life of Harry Potter, a young wizard, and his motley band of cohorts at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The work was an international hit and the series has sold hundreds of millions of copies and was adapted into a blockbuster film franchise. Rowling is now Britain’s 13th wealthiest woman—wealthier than even the Queen.

On December 26, 2001, J.K. Rowling married anesthetist Dr. Neil Murray at the couple’s home in Scotland. They have two children together, David (born in 2003) and Mackenzie (born in 2005). Rowling has one child, Jessica (born in 1993), from her previous marriage.
