The Wife Between Us, a psychological thriller by writing duo Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, gives a whole new meaning to the word “convoluted.” Maybe it’s because there are two of them, but these authors have written a book that will make you dizzy! You will find every character pitiable, likable, scary, and psychotic in turn and you won’t know until the end which label is accurate for each of them. At times it was almost too much to follow, but focus hard and in the end, your patience will be rewarded with an ending you didn’t see coming unless you are a lot smarter than I am!
The authors are very clever with their POV devices. I don’t want to get into things that will spoil the “gotcha” moments scattered throughout the narrative but you will likely do several complete about-faces in what you think is going on. Some characters are the same character, some characters are not who you think they are, and some characters will stretch the limits of credibility. Just when you think you’re on the right road, you will suddenly need to veer off on a rocky path, so don’t get whiplash! It’s the Nellie/Vanessa/Emma/Richard story with special appearances by Sister Maureen, Aunt Charlotte, BFF Sam and lovable dog Duke. You will love Aunt Charlotte and lovable dog Duke who goes AWOL to parts unknown. I like to think of him in a home with nice normal people. ?
Anytime I see that Julia Whelan is going to be narrating a book, I know it will be a stellar performance. The Wife Between Us is no exception. She actually makes the square dancing between characters much easier to follow.
I am going to recommend The Wife Between Us to those of you who thrive on complex characters, mysterious twists, and “Did that just happen?” endings. If you are a person who hates puzzles, word games, and Bingo you may not like it so much because the letters and the pieces are going to be thrown into the air and only Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen know where they will land.
