For those of you who are languishing in Original Sinners withdrawal, Michael’s Wings is the book for you. Author Tiffany Reisz has had mercy on all of us and gathered six previously written stories and added a brand new novella about one of my favorite fictional couples, Michael and Griffin, whose story is told in The Angel. I’m going to say before you read any further that if you haven’t been following The Original Sinners series, Michael’s Wings isn’t the place to start. Go find yourself a copy of the first book, The Siren, and prepare to become hooked along with the rest of us. Frankly, I can’t help envying anyone who is going to be reading this series for the first time. It is my guilty secret that I have read each of the eight books at least twice and have listened to the audio versions of all them as well.
I know that many fans of the series are particularly attached to Michael and Griffin . . . almost as attached as they are to each other and to Mistress Nora Sutherland. It won’t come as a surprise to loyal readers that Griffin decides to ask Michael to marry him; the surprise lies in Michael’s reaction. What should be a no-brainer has sent Michael into a tailspin and he turns to the one person he trusts as much as Griffin. Because Mistress Nora is living in New Orleans with her priest Søren, Michael takes off for The Big Easy for some of her unique brand of stress relief and to use her as a sounding board for the important decision he must make.
“It never occurred to me he’d want to get married,” Michael said. “It’s so . . . vanilla.”
Michael’s Wings is certainly a worthy addition to the body of work that features The Original Sinners. As with the other books and stories, the writing is laced with humor which keeps the tone light even through some heavy and difficult scenes; the descriptive language is both graphic and poetic; and the characters touch your heart because the author makes them people just like you and me. One final observation — in once more reading the stories that have been previously published, I was struck by the author’s professional growth over the period of time I’ve been reading her work. I’m so glad I picked up that copy of The Siren when I did and have made this journey with her.
