A scorching forbidden love threatens to tear a rift through the Black Dagger Brotherhood in J. R. Ward’s newest novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series.
Xcor, leader of the Band of Bastards, convicted of treason against the Blind King, is facing a brutal interrogation and torturous death at the hands of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Yet after a life marked by cruelty and evil deeds, he accepts his soldier’s fate, his sole regret the loss of a sacred female who was never his: the Chosen Layla.
Layla alone knows the truth that will save Xcor’s life. But revealing his sacrifice and his hidden heritage will expose them both and destroy everything Layla holds dear—even her role of mother to her precious young. Torn between love and loyalty, she must summon the courage to stand up against the only family she has for the only man she will ever love. Yet even if Xcor is somehow granted a reprieve, he and Layla would have to confront a graver challenge: bridging the chasm that divides their worlds without paving the way for a future of even greater war, desolation, and death.
As a dangerous old enemy returns to Caldwell, and the identity of a new deity is revealed, nothing is certain or safe in the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, not even true love . . . or destinies that have long seemed set in stone.

As a listener who has invested many hours in the saga of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, I would be hard-pressed to say which of the books is my favorite. Would it be Dark Lover, the first in the series and the one that introduces us to Wrath – the vampire who would not be king, but who takes on the job anyway? Would it be Lover Unbound which binds us to Vishous, son of the Scribe Virgin? Or Lover At Last, where forbidden love becomes reality? And who can forget Lover Eternal starring Rhage, a.k.a. Hollywood, a vampire who possesses uncanny beauty along with a raging beast? As much as I loved those books, if you ask me today, I will have to say The Chosen has quickly become my favorite. This book features Xcor, an unlikely hero, who is going to steal your heart . . . I promise! Although The Chosen is Xcor’s and Layla’s story, J. R. Ward does an incredible job of weaving in Tohrment’s story, the Qhuinn and Blay story, and more from IAm, the Shadow. Lassiter, the Fallen Angel, makes an appearance in a role that will astound you! Frankly, I think this is the best of the series for keeping the complex storyline in order and actually makes it possible for a reader or listener to make sense of the book as a standalone. The ending is very satisfying and there are hints, if you pay close attention, to a startling plot twist which is revealed.

Jim Frangione is the voice of the Brotherhood. I don’t know if I could listen to another narrator try to be the characters. He gets better with every book!

The Chosen is a must read for anyone who has ever been incensed by the mistreatment of those who are born different — keep your tissues close by. If you are one of those people who has trouble with what constitutes a family — you are in for a consciousness raising.  If you just plain love the Brothers and their world, The Chosen will provide you with a very entertaining fix for your addiction.

About J.R. Ward

J.R. Ward is the number one New York Times bestselling author of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series of vampire books. She is a winner of the prestigious Romance Writers of America RITA award for Best Paranormal Romance and is a multiple RITA nominee. A graduate of Smith College, she was a double major in History and Art History with a medieval concentration in both and she still longs at times for a return to those days sitting in dark lecture halls, looking at slides of old triptychs and reliquaries. Prior to becoming a full-time writer, she was a corporate attorney, serving for many years as the Chief of Staff of one of Harvard Medical Schools premier teaching sites. Her idea of absolute heaven is a day filled with nothing but her computer, her dog and her coffee pot and the Brothers, of course.
